Extraordinary high-temperature mechanical properties in binder-free nanopolycrystalline WC ceramic

Hongfeng Dong et al.

Summary: The binder-free nanopolycrystalline WC ceramic obtained by high-pressure and high-temperature sintering exhibits excellent mechanical properties at both room temperature and high temperature up to 1000 degrees C. It maintains a considerably high Vicker hardness at high temperature, showing outstanding thermo-mechanical stability superior to typical technical ceramics like SiC, Si3N4, Al2O3, etc. The nanocrystalline grains with dislocations and low-energy E2 grain boundaries contribute to its exceptional high-temperature mechanical properties.

Hierarchically structured powder metallurgy austenitic stainless steel with exceptional strength and ductility

G. Y. Liu et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesizes a dense hierarchically structured stainless steel with high yield strength and relatively high tensile elongation using a high-pressure/high-temperature sintering technique. The unique microstructure and high relative density of this stainless steel enable it to overcome the strength-ductility trade-off observed in conventional powder metallurgy stainless steels.

Effect of annealing treatment on microstructure evolution and deformation behavior of 304 L stainless steel made by laser powder bed fusion

Hongzhuang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructural evolution of laser powder bed fused 304 L austenitic stainless steel after stress-relieving annealing and solution annealing. The results show the migration of dislocations and the formation of subgrain boundaries during annealing, leading to changes in strength and ductility. The study also reveals the distortion networks and misorientation ranges in the samples. Tensile deformation results in deformation twins in different oriented grains, dependent on the annealing conditions.

Physical properties of high-temperature sintered TaB2 under high pressure

Zhengang Zhang et al.

Summary: Tantalum diboride (TaB2) is an important transition metal diboride with significant scientific and industrial interest. By fabricating TaB2 ceramic samples using high-pressure sintering and high-energy ball milling (HEBM), the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated under high pressure at different sintering temperatures, with comparisons made to bulk TaB2 ceramic. The Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, Young's modulus, and relative density of TaB2 ceramic at 1200 degrees C, under 5.5 GPa, were evaluated to be 26 GPa, 3.8 MPa m(1/2), 402 GPa, and 95.11%, respectively. Additionally, it was observed that the Vickers hardness, thermal stability, and fracture toughness are critically controlled by the grain size and microstructures of the samples, providing insights into the physical properties of TaB2 under high pressure and temperatures, as well as avenues for the synthesis and design of novel functional ceramics.
