Morphological and crystallographic features of granular and lath-like bainite in a low carbon microalloyed steel

David De-Castro et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of two different bainite morphologies in a low carbon microalloyed steel through different heat treatments. Advanced crystallographic characterization and quantitative metallography techniques were employed to analyze the differences in size and shape of the M/A constituents. The results show that the variations in crystallography and morphology can be explained by the different driving forces and amounts of bainitic ferrite formed at different temperature ranges.

Mechanism of subsurface microstructural fatigue crack initiation during high and very-high cycle fatigue of advanced bainitic steels

Guhui Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue crack initiation behavior of advanced bainitic steels during high cycle fatigue/very high cycle fatigue regimes and the role of retained austenite in crack initiation and propagation. The study identifies multiple micro-mechanisms responsible for fatigue crack initiation and discusses the formation of fine grains that assist crack advancement. The findings provide insights into the cyclic response of multiphase structures and the mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation during very high cycle fatigue.

Effect of Pre-Straining on High Cycle Fatigue and Fatigue Crack Propagation Behaviors of Complex Phase Steel

Sumin Kim et al.

Summary: Pre-straining has a significant impact on the high cycle fatigue and fatigue crack propagation behaviors of complex phase steel, with the resistance to HCF decreasing at 5% pre-straining and increasing at 9% pre-straining. Detailed micrographic and fractographic analyses were conducted to discuss the effect of pre-straining up to 9% on the fatigue behavior of CP steel.

Contributions of Grain Size and Crystal Orientation to Fatigue Crack Deflection and Branching Behavior in Low Carbon Steel Plates

Thao Phuong Bui et al.

Summary: The study found that crack closure dominantly contributed to fatigue crack growth resistance in fine grain material, while crack tip stress shielding induced by crack deflection and crack branching dominantly contributed to fatigue crack growth resistance in coarse grain material. Additionally, a higher content ratio of grains with (001) crystal orientation could contribute to higher crack growth resistance in coarse grain material.

Microstructural effects on fracture toughness of ultra-high strength dual phase sheet steels

D. Frometa et al.

Summary: The influence of microstructure on fracture toughness of two industrially processed 1000 MPa dual-phase (DP) steel grades was investigated. Results showed that the strain-induced transformation of retained austenite to martensite may be detrimental to cracking resistance, while the connectivity of hard secondary phases and proportion of soft phase play a major role in fracture toughness. Microstructural tailoring can balance global formability and cracking resistance of high strength DP steels.

Fracture Resistance of Advanced High-Strength Steel Sheets for Automotive Applications

D. Frometa et al.

Summary: By investigating the fracture resistance of different AHSS sheets, it was found that the specific essential work of fracture is an important parameter for evaluating local formability and fracture resistance. Results show that fracture toughness cannot be estimated from parameters derived from tensile tests, and the importance of microstructural features on crack propagation resistance. A new AHSS classification mapping and a physically motivated fracture criterion for edge-cracking prediction based on thickness strain measurements were proposed.

Improving the Mechanical Properties of Prestrained CP800 Steel by Annealing-Induced Carbides

Yiding Pei et al.

Summary: Proper annealing treatment has been shown to increase the strength and elongation product of CP800 steel samples, attributed to a change in strengthening mechanisms. The introduction of precipitation strengthening with a large number of dispersed carbides in the matrix has less impact on ductility, while solution strengthening is weakened.

Effect of hierarchical martensitic microstructure on fatigue crack growth behavior of ultra-high strength hot stamping steel

Changwang Yuan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of hierarchical martensitic microstructure on fatigue crack growth behavior in 22MnB5 hot stamping steels. The results showed that higher hot stamping temperature resulted in larger prior austenite grain size and substructure, with block being identified as the effective substructure for controlling fatigue crack growth behavior. The fatigue fracture in stable-growing region exhibited typical fatigue striations, while crack closure was observed in rapid-growing region.

Understanding main factors controlling high cycle fatigue crack initiation and propagation of high strength maraging stainless steels with Ti addition

Jialong Tian et al.

Summary: The microstructure and high cycle fatigue property of maraging stainless steels with Ti addition were studied. The crack initiation mechanism in HCF depends on the value of normalized applied stress, where high NAS is controlled by yield strength dominated by nano-size precipitates and low NAS is controlled by the distance between TiN inclusion and specimen surface.

In-Situ High-Energy X-ray Diffraction Study of Austenite Decomposition During Rapid Cooling and Isothermal Holding in Two HSLA Steels

Sen Lin et al.

Summary: In-situ high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted on two commercial high-strength low-alloy steels to study austenite decomposition during rapid cooling and isothermal heat treatments. It was found that the addition of Mo in one of the steels mainly influences the kinetics of austenite decomposition, leading to a different bainitic transformation rate. Carbide formation during prolonged isothermal holding decreases austenite carbon content and promotes continued bainitic ferrite formation.

Outstanding cracking resistance of fibrous dual phase steels

Karim Ismail et al.

Summary: DP steels with a 'Thomas-fibers' type platelet martensite morphology exhibit significantly larger cracking resistance compared to corresponding equiaxed microstructures, offering a new path to optimize fracture toughness without compromising strength and/or changing the chemical composition. The superior cracking resistance is shown to originate from a remarkable resistance to damage nucleation related to the alignment of the platelets upon deformation and from their small size.

Influence of chronological control of transformation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of complex phase steels

Hong-Bum Lee et al.

Summary: The transformation sequence significantly impacts the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of complex phase steel. The presence of carbon-enriched blocky martensite increases the strength of the alloy but decreases the impact toughness, while a uniform lath-type mixture of martensite and bainite can enhance the strength without compromising impact toughness.

Microstructure and properties of an advanced high-strength steel after austempering treatment

Shangping Chen et al.

Summary: The study on an Si-rich advanced high-strength steel revealed that the size and morphology of bainitic ferrite varies with the austempering temperature, with incomplete transformation only observed within a limited temperature range. The strength of the steel is mainly determined by the ferrite size of the matrix, including bainitic ferrite and martensite. Furthermore, the hole expansion capacity is positively correlated with the C content of retained austenite and negatively correlated with the amount of retained austenite and carbide formation.
