Deformation behavior and microstructure characteristics of the laser-welded Ti-6Al-4V joint under variable amplitude fatigue

Jintao Chen et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior and microstructure characteristics of laser-welded Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy joints under variable amplitude fatigue were investigated. It was found that the fatigue limit of the joint was 339 +/- 5 MPa. Fractography analysis revealed that fatigue cracks originated from the surface in the weld metal and were caused by differences in grain size and texture orientation. Larger average grain size and the presence of acicular alpha' martensite with preferred orientation in the weld metal contributed to fatigue crack initiation.

The high cycle fatigue behavior, failure characteristics, and fatigue life empirical relationship of 9% Cr steel under different stress ratios at 630 °C

Quanyi Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of mean stress on the fatigue failure behavior of 9% Cr steel at high temperatures is studied through high cyclic fatigue tests. Three fatigue failure modes are identified: surface crack initiation failure, sub-surface crack initiation failure, and necking induced failure. The surface and sub-surface crack initiation failure modes gradually change to necking induced failure mode with increasing stress ratio. The oxide intrusive-extrusion mechanism and inhomogeneous microstructure play important roles in determining the fatigue failure behavior.

Rolling-sliding contact fatigue failure and associated evolutions of microstructure, crystallographic orientation and residual stress of AISI 9310 gear steel

Huan Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, the rolling-sliding contact fatigue (RSCF) failures of AISI 9310 gear steel were thoroughly analyzed. The fatigue life, microstructure and crystallographic orientation evolution, and microhardness and residual stress distributions were characterized. The RSCF life of AISI 9310 steel roller decreased with increasing maximum contact pressure, but could be improved by shot peening due to enhanced microhardness and compressive residual stress. Main fatigue damage near the roller surface included inclined cracks, micro-pitting, spallation, and plastic deformation. The RSCF process also resulted in preferred crystallographic orientations.

Effects of local microstructure on crack initiation in super martensitic stainless steel under very-high-cycle fatigue

Xue Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of local microstructure on the crack initiation behavior of a super martensitic stainless steel in the very high cycle fatigue regime. Results show that non-inclusion-induced crack initiation dominates, with fatigue cracks initiating from martensite boundaries forming slip areas. The size and orientation of martensite lath affect the morphology of slip areas but have limited influence on the formation of fine granular areas at the fracture surface.

Mechanism of subsurface microstructural fatigue crack initiation during high and very-high cycle fatigue of advanced bainitic steels

Guhui Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue crack initiation behavior of advanced bainitic steels during high cycle fatigue/very high cycle fatigue regimes and the role of retained austenite in crack initiation and propagation. The study identifies multiple micro-mechanisms responsible for fatigue crack initiation and discusses the formation of fine grains that assist crack advancement. The findings provide insights into the cyclic response of multiphase structures and the mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation during very high cycle fatigue.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of two kinds of weathering steel welded joints

Tao Cong et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of welded joints for Q450NQR1 and Q450AWR5 alloys were investigated. The inhomogeneous microstructures of the welded joints can result in heterogeneous mechanical responses. The microhardness distributions are not uniform and the tensile strength slightly differs between the two welded joints. However, the fatigue life is dominated by the welded defects in both cases.

Very long life fatigue failure mechanism of electron beam welded joint for titanium alloy at elevated temperature

Fulin Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the very long life fatigue failure mechanism of welded joints for titanium alloy at 400 degrees C, revealing a nonhomogeneous microstructure and welded pores as the main defects leading to crack initiation. The increase in temperature reduces fatigue strength and alters the shape of S-N curves for welded joints.

Tensile and very high cycle fatigue behaviors of a compressor blade titanium alloy at room and high temperatures

Fulin Liu et al.

Summary: The tensile and fatigue behaviors of TC17 titanium alloy at room temperature and high temperature were studied, where it was found that the tensile strength decreases at high temperature while the elongation remains unchanged. The fatigue S-N curves and failure mode also change with temperature, with the crack initiation mainly attributed to the brittle oxygen-enriched subsurface (BOES) layer at high temperatures.
