Propolis inspired sunscreens for efficient UV-protection and skin barrier maintenance

Summary: This study utilized natural ultraviolet-blocking molecule caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) to prepare poly(CAPE) nanoparticles (NPs) and successfully applied them in the fabrication of bioinspired hydrogel sunscreens. Poly(CAPE) NPs showed better dispersion and stability in water compared to small molecular CAPE, with lower toxicity and skin permeability. The resulting composite hydrogel sunscreens exhibited excellent water resistance and safety upon contact with the skin, as well as providing effective UV protection and maintaining skin barrier functions.

Influence of TiO2 nanocomposite UV filter surface chemistry and their interactions with organic UV filters on uptake and toxicity toward cultured fish gill cells

Summary: This study compared the toxicity of three different nanosized TiO2 UV filters and found that they were not cytotoxic to cells, but exhibited differences in cellular uptake. Additionally, the presence of nanoparticles tended to decrease the toxicity of organic UV filters, potentially due to reduced availability of the organic filters due to adsorption to the nanoparticle surface.

Calcium Phosphates from Fishery Byproducts as a Booster of the Sun Protection Factor in Sunscreens

Summary: Calcium phosphates can be used as bio- and eco-compatible alternatives to UV filters in sunscreens to decrease the associated health risks. Natural calcium phosphates extracted from fish bones have been tested as boosters of the sun protection factor (SPF), working in synergy with UV filters to increase the UV-shielding efficiency of sunscreens. The results show that these CaPs can effectively increase the SPF of sunscreens while decreasing the concentration of UV filters used.

Future challenges for the scientific community and cosmetics companies in expanding the application of CaPs in cosmetics are also discussed.
