Dual-phase hetero-structured strategy to improve ductility of a low carbon martensitic steel

J. X. Huang et al.

Summary: The martensitic transformation greatly enhances the strength of low-carbon steels, but usually at the expense of ductility. By creating a dual-phase heterostructure through annealing and cold rolling, a high strength and ductility combination steel was achieved. The hetero-deformation induced stress in the sample contributed to the improved mechanical properties of the steel.

Effect of intercritical heat treatment on microstructure, nano-size precipitation and mechanical properties of Fe-Ni-Cu-Al low carbon steel

Zhentuan Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the improvement of toughness and plasticity of Fe-Ni-Cu-Al steel by utilizing an intercritical heat treatment. The results show that a multi-phase microstructure consisting of martensite, intercritical ferrite, and austenite reversion can be obtained through this treatment. The reduction in intercritical quenching temperature leads to enhanced impact energy and plasticity due to the formation of intercritical ferrite and austenite reversion. The coarsening of Ni3Al particles is accelerated, resulting in strengthening of the steel through Orowan bypassing mechanism.

Strengthening and ductilization of laminate dual-phase steels with high martensite content

Bo Gao et al.

Summary: By tailoring the microstructural features, steels with excellent strength and ductility can be achieved. In this work, laminate dual-phase (DP) steels with high martensite content were produced, leading to significantly improved strength and ductility. The influence of laminate structure and high martensite content were discussed, along with the strengthening and ductilizing mechanisms.

Improved mechanical properties of V-microalloyed dual phase steel by enhancing martensite deformability

Jingbin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study achieved significant improvements in strength and ductility by preparing vanadium-microalloyed dual-phase steel, with a ductile martensitic phase differentiating from traditional low-carbon martensitic lath in morphology and lattice structure. Through research, it was found that the microstructure and mechanical properties of the steel can be improved by the synergy of thermodynamics and kinetics.

Microstructural effects on fracture toughness of ultra-high strength dual phase sheet steels

D. Frometa et al.

Summary: The influence of microstructure on fracture toughness of two industrially processed 1000 MPa dual-phase (DP) steel grades was investigated. Results showed that the strain-induced transformation of retained austenite to martensite may be detrimental to cracking resistance, while the connectivity of hard secondary phases and proportion of soft phase play a major role in fracture toughness. Microstructural tailoring can balance global formability and cracking resistance of high strength DP steels.

Simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility in ferrite-martensite steel via increasing the martensite fraction

Fatemeh Yaghoobi et al.

Summary: By increasing the intercritical annealing temperature, the volume fraction of martensite in steel can be increased, leading to improved strength and ductility. Lowering the carbon content in martensite can enhance work hardening rate and strain hardening ability. DP830 steel exhibits more ductile fracture behavior compared to other DP steels.

Outstanding cracking resistance of fibrous dual phase steels

Karim Ismail et al.

Summary: DP steels with a 'Thomas-fibers' type platelet martensite morphology exhibit significantly larger cracking resistance compared to corresponding equiaxed microstructures, offering a new path to optimize fracture toughness without compromising strength and/or changing the chemical composition. The superior cracking resistance is shown to originate from a remarkable resistance to damage nucleation related to the alignment of the platelets upon deformation and from their small size.
