Achieving simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility in Al matrix composites by employing the synergetic strengthening effect of micro- and nano-SiCps

Kan Liu et al.

Summary: The incorporation of micro-and nano-sized SiC particles into an aluminum matrix through powder metallurgy results in a unique ultrafine-grained microstructure. The dual-scale reinforcements enhance dislocation accumulation and strain hardening capacity. The composites with both micro-SiC particles and nano-SiC particles exhibit improved tensile properties compared to composites with only micro-SiC particles.

Breaking the strength-ductility trade-off in additively manufactured aluminum alloys through grain structure control by duplex nucleation

Jinliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel duplex nucleation mechanism to control the grain structure of additively manufactured AlCuMgTi-TiB2 composites for achieving a homogeneous equiaxed grain structure and breaking the strength-ductility trade-off. The results show that the proposed alloy design approach and duplex nucleation mechanism can guide the tailoring of the microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured aluminum parts.

In situ study on fracture behaviors of SiC/2A14Al composite joint: Co-construction of microstructure and mechanical properties via laser welding

Mingyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fracture characteristics and damage mechanisms of a notorious SiC/2A14Al joint, and found that the sandwich eutectic microstructure inhibited crack propagation and dispersed extra stress. A rapid solidification process strategy was designed to improve the mechanical properties of the joint, and a joint with high tensile strength was successfully prepared.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of laser welded-brazed titanium/aluminum joints assisted by titanium mesh interlayer

Zhijie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new method of using a titanium mesh interlayer in laser welding-brazing aluminum and titanium to enhance the load capacity of Ti/Al joints. Experimental results revealed that the titanium mesh improved the spreading and wetting abilities of molten aluminum on the titanium surface, resulting in the formation of Al3Ti intermetallic compounds through the Ti/Al interface reaction. These improvements increased the microhardness and load capacity of the joints.

Enhanced strength and ductility in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys fabricated by laser powder b e d fusion using a synergistic grain-refining strategy

Xiaohui Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a synergistic grain-refining strategy for high-strength aluminum alloys fabricated by additive manufacturing. By incorporating TiC and TiH2 particles, the microstructure of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys during the laser powder bed fusion process was controlled, resulting in crack-free alloys with significantly refined grains. The introduction of TiC nanoparticles improved the density of nucleation sites and physically blocked grain growth, leading to enhanced mechanical properties.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the electron-beam welded joints of cast Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructures, hardness distribution and strengthening mechanisms of the electron-beam welded joints of cast Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy plate were investigated. It was found that the precipitation of fine Omega, theta' plates and dispersed precipitates after post-welding heat treatment is the main reason for the increase in strength of the welded joint.
