Nanoindentation study of mechanical and wear properties of spark plasma sintered Ti-6Ni-xTiCN composites

Azeez Lawan Rominiyi et al.

Summary: Monolithic pure Ti and Ti-6Ni-xTiCN composites were fabricated using spark plasma sintering method and their mechanical and anti-wear characteristics were investigated using nanoindentation technique. Microstructural analysis showed alpha-Ti phase in pure Ti matrix, while composites contained alpha-Ti phase as well as in-situ TiN, Ti2Ni intermetallic, and undissolved TiCN phases. Nanoindentation results showed increased hardness, elastic modulus, and elastic recovery index with increasing reinforcement contents. Ti-6Ni-xTiCN composites exhibited better wear and impact resistance compared to pure Ti. Ti-6Ni-10TiCN composite showed the optimum combination of nanomechanical and anti-wear properties under applied loads.

Anisotropic tension-compression asymmetry in SLM 316L stainless steel

Zhanfeng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the anisotropic tension-compression asymmetry of SLM 316 L stainless steel was investigated through experiments and finite element simulations. It was found that the tension-compression asymmetry in the building direction is caused by directional internal stresses, while the asymmetry perpendicular to the building direction is correlated with the microstructure and internal stresses.

Local mechanical properties and precipitation inhomogeneity in large-grained Al-Mg-Si alloy

Anette B. Hagen et al.

Summary: Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) alloys exhibit strong mechanical properties but are weakened by a soft precipitation free zone (PFZ) near grain boundaries during heat treatment, reducing material ductility. This study employs nanoindentation and microstructure characterization to quantitatively analyze these alloys. Experimental results confirm that the PFZ weakens the material, while an adjacent region exhibits increased hardness due to a higher density of precipitates. This previously unrecognized harder zone has important implications for the mechanical properties of large-grained aluminum alloys.

On the anisotropic indentation modulus and anisotropic creep behavior of 6-Sn characterized by nanoindentation methods

B. Ernst et al.

Summary: The influence of orientation on the indentation modulus, hardness, and creep properties of high purity 6-Sn (wt.%: 99.999) was examined using nanoindentation methods. Crystal orientations close to < 100 >, < 110 >, and < 001 > were identified, and continuous stiffness measurements (CSM) and constant load creep tests were performed. The results indicated an orientation dependence in the indentation modulus, hardness, and creep properties.

Analysis of indentation size effect (ISE) in nanoindentation hardness in polycrystalline PMN-PT piezoceramics with different domain configurations

V. S. Kathavate et al.

Summary: Piezoelectric materials with varying microstructural features exhibit different levels of hardness influenced by domain configurations rather than grain size. Nanoindentation experiments on PMN-PT show varying Reverse Indentation Size Effect (RISE) and normal ISE in hardness, analyzed through the PSR model for understanding the origins of these effects. The study emphasizes the importance of domain configurations in determining the hardness properties of piezoelectric materials.

Dislocation-grain boundary interactions: recent advances on the underlying mechanisms studied via nanoindentation testing

Farhan Javaid et al.

Summary: In order to understand the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline materials, a detailed analysis of the interactions between individual grain boundaries and dislocations is essential. Nanoindentation has emerged as a powerful tool for studying the local mechanical response near the grain boundaries. The improved instrumentation and testing protocols have enabled the capture of various grain boundary-dislocation interactions during nanoindentation in the form of strain bursts. This review focuses on recent advancements in studying dislocation-grain boundary interactions and the underlying mechanisms via nanoindentation.

Crystal plasticity finite element simulation of NiTi shape memory alloy under canning compression based on constitutive model containing dislocation density

Bingyao Yan et al.

Summary: Crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulation is employed to investigate the plastic deformation mechanism of NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) under canning compression at 400 degrees C, showing that plastic deformation is dominated by dislocation slip without stress-induced martensite phase transformation and deformation twinning. The CPFE model provides valuable insights into the texture evolution, stress and strain fields, as well as SSD and GND densities during the plastic deformation process of NiTi SMA.

Investigation of novel multi-layer sandwich panels under quasi-static indentation loading using experimental and numerical analyses

Seyed Ahmad Taghizadeh et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and numerically investigated the effect of multi-layering in sandwich panel composite structures with different configurations of corrugated cores under quasi-static indentation loading. The results showed that multi-layering enhanced the structural strength and energy absorption of the composite sandwich panels. Rectangular cores demonstrated the best functionality, while damage mechanisms in the quasi-static indentation process included matrix cracking, fiber breakage, and delamination.

Indentation size effect, geometrically necessary dislocations and pile-up effects in hardness testing of irradiated nickel

M. A. Mattucci et al.

Summary: The study compared the response of Ni irradiated with protons to the non-irradiated material, based on dislocation density, through TEM analysis and nano/micro-scale indentation tests. The results showed a bi-linear trend in the Nix-Gao model for both irradiated and non-irradiated material, indicating a transition in deformation mechanisms at the nano-scale. It was suggested that the increase in hardness observed in the irradiated material during nanoindentation could be attributed to a higher density of geometrically necessary dislocations.

Influence of grain orientation on hardness anisotropy and dislocation behavior of AlN ceramic in nanoindentation

Peng Tang et al.

Summary: The study focused on the anisotropic properties of AlN grains using Berkovich nanoindentation, revealing a strong correlation between grain orientation, hardness, and elastic modulus. Deformation behavior was observed on specific grain orientations, with mechanisms of anisotropic pop-in events and dislocations elucidated through molecular dynamics simulation. The use of Schmid factor to determine activated slip systems proved accurate for identifying grain orientation in AlN ceramic. Plastically active regions from nanoindentation could roughly indicate crystalline orientation.

William G. Feather et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a numerical method to embed any value of the power-law exponent in a crystal plasticity finite element model, reflecting the true material strain-rate sensitivity, and successfully applies it to predict the complex strain-rate sensitive response of AZ31 Mg alloy.
