Atomic-scale 3D imaging of individual dopant atoms in an oxide semiconductor

K. A. Hunnestad et al.

Summary: Chemical doping plays a crucial role in controlling the physical properties of semiconductors, especially in complex oxides. However, determining the density variations of dopant atoms is a major challenge in lightly doped systems. In this study, atom probe tomography was used to resolve the atomic sites occupied by dopant atoms in the small band gap semiconductor Er(Mn,Ti)O-3 and quantify their spatial variations.

Influence of field conditions on quantitative analysis of single crystal thorium dioxide by atom probe tomography

Amrita Sen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of APT laser energy and specimen base temperature on compositional accuracy in single crystal thoria (ThO2). It is found that the expected stoichiometry of ThO2 can be achieved under specific conditions, and Bayesian methods are applied to overcome mass resolution limitations.

Exploring Biases in Atom Probe Tomography Compositional Analysis of Minerals

Chiara Cappelli et al.

Summary: Atom probe tomography (APT) is an important nanogeochemistry technique for estimating mineral compositions at the nanoscale, with particular challenges in oxide systems. A study comparing spinel and garnet crystals using laser-assisted APT revealed potential mechanisms for mineral stoichiometry biases. Factors such as multiple events, neutral molecules formation, and co-evaporation in a dead space-dead time window were found to contribute to atom deficit.

Summary: APT provides three-dimensional compositional mapping with sub-nanometre resolution and high sensitivity for all elements. The overview covers the development, specimen preparation, data reconstruction, analysis, applications, performance underpinning, strengths, limitations, and potential improvements of APT. Future advancements aim for true atomic-scale tomography through new specimen preparation methods, novel technologies, and interoperability with complementary techniques.
