Ramin Hamzehei et al.

Summary: This article proposes a novel bioinspired friction-based mechanical metamaterial, inspired by parrot's beaks, that exhibits a zero Poisson's ratio behavior. The mechanical performances of the metamaterials are studied at both macro and micro scales through experiments and finite element analysis, demonstrating their energy absorption and dissipation features.

Space-reconfigurable reflector with auxetic lattice material

Bin Xu et al.

Summary: A novel auxetic lattice material is used in this study to increase the reconfiguration accuracy of a mechanically reconfigurable reflector (MRR) while maintaining a thinner shell thickness. By optimizing the stacking sequence of carbon fiber composite and combining it with an elliptic voids array structure, the in-plane effective Young's modulus is significantly decreased while maintaining a small decrease in bending stiffness. Simulation results demonstrate that the use of this auxetic lattice material can achieve high reshaping accuracy.

Additively Manufactured Multi-Morphology Bone-like Porous Scaffolds: Experiments and Micro-Computed Tomography-Based Finite Element Modeling Approaches

Reza Noroozi et al.

Summary: Tissue engineering, a critical interdisciplinary field in regenerative medicine, aims to repair or replace damaged tissues using biomaterials and cell transplantation. Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionized the production of complex geometries, advancing bioprinting in generating biomimicking organs and tissues with required porous graded structures. This study experimentally and numerically investigates suitable triply periodic minimal surface structures for manufacturing scaffolds mimicking the heterogeneous nature of bone. The influence of printing direction and material is also explored.

Mechanics and extreme low-frequency band gaps of auxetic hexachiral acoustic metamaterial with internal resonant unit

Pei Sun et al.

Summary: Due to their light weight, high specific strength, and excellent damping characteristics, auxetic honeycomb structures have recently attracted widespread attention. By improving lattice topology design and associated parameters, this novel structure has low-frequency vibration isolation and load-bearing capacity, becoming one of the current research hotspots. In this study, an auxetic hexachiral acoustic metamaterial with an internal resonant unit was proposed, and the mechanical properties and band gap characteristics were analyzed using the finite element method and verified experimentally. The influences of lattice topology parameters on the performance were also discussed. The results show that the novel metamaterial with extreme low-frequency elastic wave band gap and improved mechanical properties can be obtained by combining the hexachiral frame with the internal local resonance unit.

Influence of specimen size on the mechanical properties of microlattices obtained by selective laser melting

Matteo Gavazzoni et al.

Summary: A detailed study of compression tests on lattice structures obtained by selective laser melting with AlSi7Mg powder was conducted, investigating the effect of different cell topologies on the mechanical response. While specimen size had influence on maximum stress and failure mechanism, it did not significantly affect elastic modulus and yielding stress. Test results were compared with simulation results, showing good prediction accuracy in terms of elastic modulus and yielding stress.

A novel wavy non-uniform ligament chiral stent with J-shaped stress-strain behavior to mimic the native trachea

Jiapeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a wavy non-uniform ligament chiral tracheal stent inspired by the structure of the native trachea, achieving J-shaped stress-strain behavior. The negative Poisson's ratio and auxetic diameter curves versus axial strain of the stent were studied in detail to enhance cross-section ventilation and reduce stent migration. This novel tracheal stent with a unique microstructure has the potential to match the physiological activities of the native trachea and reduce potential complications.
