High strength-ductility combination by quenching and partitioning of a low carbon microalloyed dual-phase steel

Alok Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the quenching and partitioning process of low carbon micro-alloyed dual-phase steel. The final microstructure after quenching and partitioning treatment contains martensite and fine ferrite grains. Both hot rolled and cold rolled conditions show high strength, ductility, and isotropy. The strength is attributed to the fine ferrite grain structure, martensite phase, and dislocation density, while the ductility is influenced by various factors such as grain size and texture weakening. The partitioning treatment successfully stabilizes the retained austenite and induces the TRIP effect, leading to the formation of weak and partial texture and isotropy in the microstructure.

Enhanced strength-ductility synergy via novel bifunctional nano-precipitates in a high-entropy alloy

Liyuan Liu et al.

Summary: A new Ni-35(CoFe)(55)V5Nb5 high-entropy alloy with a novel bifunctional L-12-Ni3Nb nano-precipitate was developed to enhance the strength and ductility synergy of the alloy, showing high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and remarkable elongation. The novel nano-precipitates play a dual role in improving the alloy properties through precipitation strengthening and lowering the stacking fault energy for better work-hardening ability and plasticity.

Co-strengthening of dislocations and precipitates in alumina-forming austenitic steel with cold rolling followed by aging

Qiuzhi Gao et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolutions of AFA steel after cold-rolled reductions and subsequent aging at 700 degrees C were studied. It was found that increased dislocations from cold rolling enhanced the volume fraction and refined the particle size of precipitates, but also accelerated the coarsening rate. Cold-rolled AFA steel aged for 2 hours exhibited excellent mechanical properties due to the synergistic strengthening of dislocations and precipitates.

Formation mechanism of CuNiAl-rich multi-structured precipitation and its effect on mechanical properties for ultra-high strength low carbon steel obtained via direct quenching and tempering process

Wen Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural transformation and precipitation behavior of CuNiAl-rich particles under the influence of the direct quenching and tempering (DQ-T) process. The results showed that the high-density dislocations formed during the DQ process provided numerous nucleation sites for the CuNiAl-rich particles. Phase field method simulation revealed the coarsening mechanisms and formation of 9R-B2 core-shell structural particles. The yield strength of the steel was increased due to co-precipitation, while retaining good toughness.

Synergistic enhancement of strength and ductility of cobalt-free maraging steel via nanometer-scaled microstructures

Hu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of solution treatment parameters on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of cobalt-free maraging steel was investigated. The high strength and satisfactory ductility of the material were attributed to the specific distribution and microstructure of nano-sized precipitates. By annealing at a high temperature for a short time, finer and more precipitates could be obtained, leading to improved mechanical properties.

Trifunctional Laves precipitates enabling dual-hierarchical FeCrAl alloys ultra-strong and ductile

S. Y. Liu et al.

Summary: The synergy of ultra-high strength and large ductility is important but challenging to achieve in structural alloys. This study presents a new strategy using a dual-hierarchical alloy to embed hard-yet-deformable precipitates in a lamellar coarse-grained matrix and decorate the lamellar boundary with equiaxed ultra-fine grains as crack arresters. This design concept allows for a substantial increase in yield strength up to 1.0 GPa while maintaining enhanced uniform elongation, providing a new avenue for engineering materials with exceptional fracture resistance.

Unraveling a novel precipitate enrichment dependent strengthening behaviour in nickel-based superalloy

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: This study systematically clarifies the effect of size deviation degree on the complex interaction between precipitates and dislocations in nickel-based superalloy. A new statistical approach using minimal spanning tree is proposed to accurately assess the contribution of spatially randomly distributed precipitates to the strength. The result shows that the maximal precipitation strengthening occurs when the size variance is equal to the average size.

Atomic origins of the plastic deformation micro-mechanisms of ?/?? FeCoNiAlTi high-entropy alloys

W. W. Xu et al.

Summary: This study explores the plastic deformation behaviors of FeCoNiAlTi high-entropy alloys by computing generalized stacking fault energies, revealing that the multicomponent nature and tuning a suitable active factor value can achieve a balance between strength and ductility. Increasing the amount of Co and Ti promotes the activation of microbands and improves mechanical properties. Adjusting the Co/Fe ratio or Al/Ti ratio contributes to the desired mechanical properties of the high-entropy alloys.

Achieving better synergy of strength and ductility by adjusting size and volume fraction of coherent Κ'-carbides in a lightweight steel

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous grain structures with dual-nanoprecipitates are designed and fabricated in a lightweight steel. Aging treatment increases the size and volume fraction of coherent Kappa'-carbides, resulting in better tensile properties due to higher hetero-deformation-induced hardening and density of induced dislocations. Two distinct precipitation hardening mechanisms are revealed, and high density of stacking faults and nanotwins contribute to strain hardening in aged samples.

Summary: The study discovered that the Pugh and Pettifor criteria are identical for materials with cubic crystal structures, both predicting the brittleness and ductility of materials. The Pugh criterion is based on the shear modulus to bulk modulus ratio of a metal, while the Pettifor criterion is based on the difference between single-crystal elastic constants.

Correlations to improve room temperature ductility of refractory complex concentrated alloys

O. N. Senkov et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the room temperature tensile and compressive properties of refractory complex, concentrated alloys (RCCAs) to explore correlations capable of anticipating ductility in this class of structural materials. A new ductility criterion based on the RCCA yield strength was suggested, but more data and research are needed to support this trend. Predictive models for estimating the yield strength in RCCAs could help identify alloys with usable levels of ductility.
