White Blood Cell Membrane-Coated Nanoparticles: Recent Development and Medical Applications

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: White blood cell membrane-coated nanoparticles (WBC-NPs) are a novel type of nanomaterial with wide-ranging medical applications, including drug delivery, biological neutralization, immune modulation, and tumor cell isolation. By fusing the plasma membranes of white blood cells, WBC-NPs inherit the antigenic properties of the source cells and exhibit broad biointerfacing properties.

Inhibitory effect of ficin on Candida albicans biofilm formation and pre-formed biofilms

Jiantao Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of ficin, a protease, on Candida albicans biofilm was investigated. The results showed that ficin significantly reduced the biomass of both forming and pre-formed biofilms. However, it did not significantly affect fungal activity. Ficin also influenced fungal polymorphism and biofilm-associated gene expression, especially in groups with strong antibiofilm effects.

Lactobacillus cell envelope-coated nanoparticles for antibiotic delivery against cariogenic biofilm and dental caries

Luting Weng et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared nanoparticles, called LA/TCS@PLGA-NPs, with favorable properties using cell membrane coating technology and Lactobacillus strains. The nanoparticles were able to adhere to Streptococcus mutans and interfere with its biofilm formation, leading to significant inhibition of the activity, biomass, and virulence gene expression of the biofilms. In vivo experiments also showed that LA/TCS@PLGA-NPs had a long-lasting inhibitory effect on the progression of dental caries. These nanoparticles could be considered as a new class of effective drug delivery systems for caries prevention.

Potential Combinatory Effect of Cannabidiol and Triclosan Incorporated into Sustained Release Delivery System against Oral Candidiasis

Mark Feldman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of incorporating cannabidiol (CBD) and triclosan into a sustained-release varnish (SRV) to enhance their pharmaceutical efficacy against Candida albicans biofilm. The results demonstrate that SRV-CBD and SRV-triclosan exhibit strong antibiofilm activity, inhibiting biofilm formation and removing mature fungal biofilm. Additionally, the combination of SRV-CBD/triclosan shows a significant enhancement of antibiofilm activity. These findings suggest that CBD or triclosan incorporation into SRV is an effective strategy to combat fungal biofilms, and the mixture of CBD and triclosan in SRV exhibits complementary antibiofilm activity.
