A physics-based model for crystal orientation dictionary indexing by directional reflectance microscopy

Chenyang Zhu et al.

Summary: Directional Reflectance Microscopy (DRM) is a new optical technique that allows mapping of grain orientation in crystalline solids. Researchers have proposed a new indexing method, DI-DRM, which improves the robustness and versatility of DRM by comparing measured reflectance signals to a dictionary of simulated signals generated by a metal. The DI-DRM approach has been demonstrated on nickel and aluminum polycrystals, showing improved accuracy compared to traditional fitting methods.

Crystallographic anisotropy of corrosion rate and surface faceting of polycrystalline 90Cu-10Ni in acidic NaCl solution

Xuening Yi et al.

Summary: This study statistically investigates the orientation-dependent corrosion rate and surface faceting of polycrystalline 90Cu-10Ni in acidic NaCl solution. The results show a clear correlation between crystallographic orientation and surface faceting, as well as a linear relationship between corrosion rate and grain deviation angle. The study provides a simple method for grain orientation identification through etching and offers promising solutions for optimizing corrosion properties through controlled etching.

Extracellular Electron Exchange Capabilities of Desulfovibrio ferrophilus and Desulfopila corrodens

Dandan Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that Desulfovibrio ferrophilus cannot directly extract electrons from solid-phase electron-donating surfaces, but promotes the reduction of Fe(III) oxide by releasing a soluble electron shuttle. It has adopted a novel combination of strategies for extracellular electron transport, which may have biogeochemical and technological significance.

Effect of grain size and crystallographic orientation on the corrosion behaviors of low alloy steel

Stainless steel corrosion via direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer by Geobacter species

Hai-Yan Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the mechanism of microbial corrosion of stainless steel is significantly different from that of pure iron. Unlike in the corrosion of pure iron, H-2 is not abiotically produced from stainless steel during microbial corrosion, and direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer is a feasible route for stainless steel corrosion.

An automated and unbiased grain segmentation method based on directional reflectance microscopy

Mallory Wittwer et al.

Summary: A new method for automated and reliable grain segmentation using directional reflectance microscopy has been proposed in this study, eliminating the need for manual parameter selection. Through a series of processing steps, the method can be applied to metal samples with various crystal structures and grain orientation distributions, providing a more objective, robust, and universal characterization of polycrystalline metals.

Effect of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB) on the Corrosion of Buried Pipe Steel in Acidic Soil Solution

Lijuan Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that SRB grew well in acidic soil and attached to the steel surface, causing microbiologically influenced corrosion. The corrosion process of the steel was significantly impacted by the SRB biofilm, with the biofilm inhibiting corrosion at the early stage and accelerating corrosion at a later stage. The steel surface suffered severe pitting corrosion in the SRB-containing soil solution.
