Hydrogen trapping and embrittlement in high-strength Al alloys

Huan Zhao et al.

Summary: As regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from transportation become stricter, it has become necessary to re-examine the materials used for vehicles. While high-strength aluminum alloys commonly used in aircrafts can help reduce the weight of automobiles, they are prone to environmental degradation. Hydrogen 'embrittlement' is often considered the main cause of this degradation, but the exact mechanisms behind this failure are not well understood due to the challenges in analyzing hydrogen at the atomic scale. In this study, near-atomic-scale analysis of hydrogen trapped in second-phase particles and at grain boundaries in a high-strength aluminum alloy was performed. These observations guided atomistic ab initio calculations which revealed that the co-segregation of alloying elements and hydrogen promotes grain boundary decohesion, and the strong partitioning of hydrogen into the second-phase particles removes solute hydrogen from the matrix, thus preventing hydrogen embrittlement. This research advances our understanding of hydrogen-assisted embrittlement in aluminum alloys and highlights the role of hydrogen traps in reducing cracking and guiding new alloy design.

A new healing strategy for metals: Programmed damage and repair

Mariia Arseenko et al.

Summary: Self-healing strategies for metallic systems are still under-developed, but this study proposes a new strategy based on damage localization particles that can be healed by heat treatment. The strategy was successfully validated with a commercial aluminum alloy, showing that short and low temperature heating can repair micron-sized damage.

Nanoscale periodic gradients generated by laser powder bed fusion of an AlSi10Mg alloy

Williams Lefebvre et al.

Summary: The study reveals the formation of a periodic microstructural pattern in an AlSi10Mg alloy through laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) using scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. It discusses the non-equilibrium structures and compositional fields resulting from the ultrafast cooling of the LPBF process and identifies clusters in the supersaturated aluminium solid solution retained by the LPBF process.

Unravelling the multi-scale structure-property relationship of laser powder bed fusion processed and heat-treated AlSi10Mg

P. Van Cauwenbergh et al.

Summary: The study uncovers the relationship between the microstructure and macroscopic material properties of LPBF-processed AlSi10Mg, identifying grain refinement and Si supersaturation as crucial elements for achieving superior mechanical and thermal properties during heat treatment. Additionally, an electrical conductivity model accurately predicts Si solute concentration in LPBF-processed and heat-treated AlSi10Mg, facilitating understanding of microstructural evolution during heat treatment. The LPBF-processed and heat-treated AlSi10Mg conditions exhibit a range of superior mechanical properties compared to the mould-cast T6 reference condition.
