An ultra-strong and ductile crystalline-amorphous nanostructured surface layer on TiZrHfTaNb0.2 high-entropy alloy by laser surface processing

Jiasi Luo et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous crystalline-amorphous nanostructures exhibit superior strength-ductility synergy through the cooperative effects of nanograins and amorphous grain boundaries in co-deformation. In this study, a facile laser surface remelting technique was successfully developed to fabricate a 100 μm-thick gradient nanostructured layer with phase decomposition on a TiZrHfTaNb0.2 high-entropy alloy. A 5 μm-thick crystalline-amorphous nanostructured surface layer with an average grain size of 7 nm was obtained. This nanostructured layer demonstrated an ultrahigh yield strength of 6.0 GPa and a compression strain of 25% during localized micro-pillar compression tests. Co-deformation cooperative mechanisms observed included well-retained dislocation activities in nanograins and crystallization in amorphous grain boundaries, resulting in grain coarsening through grain boundary-mediated plasticity. This study provides insights into the development of high-performance high-entropy alloys with novel crystalline-amorphous nanostructures and their plastic deformation mechanisms.

Densification, microstructure, and properties of W-Mo-Cu alloys prepared with nano-sized Cu powders via large electric current sintering

Hongling Zhou et al.

Summary: This study fabricated a novel W-Mo-Cu alloy by large current electric field sintering at a relatively low temperature, and investigated the effects of Cu powder size on the densification, microstructure, and properties. It was found that smaller copper powders were beneficial to improving the distributional homogeneity of elements and the sintering densification.

Strengthening nanocrystalline immiscible bimetallic composite by high-entropy effect

Jinyang Luo et al.

Summary: This paper successfully fabricated a bimetallic nanocrystalline composite by replacing the refractory phase with a multi-principal refractory high-entropy phase. The interfacial configurations and compositional inter-diffusion between immiscible metals were investigated, and the mechanical properties and high-temperature performance of the composite were evaluated. The results showed improved properties compared to the traditional counterpart, suggesting promising potential for designing advanced immiscible metallic composites.

In situ synthesis of core-shell W-Cu nanopowders for fabricating full-densified and fine-grained alloys with dramatically improved performance

Xiaojing Li et al.

Summary: A new one-step thermal plasma synthesis route was developed to construct core-shell W-Cu nanoparticles with size about 30 nm, addressing the issues of homogeneous elemental distribution and short diffusion distance for Cu to form network around W grains. The synthesized nanocomposite powders facilitated fast densification with uniform microstructure and suppressed W grain growth, resulting in a compact with high relative density and hardness.

The effect of the graded bilayer design on the strain depth profiles and microstructure of Cu/W nano-multilayers

A. Druzhinin et al.

Summary: The properties and thermal stability of thin films and nano-multilayers are determined by in-depth stress gradients rather than average stress state. The strain depth profile of W nano-layers strongly depends on the disposition of Cu/W bilayer substacks in the Cu/W NML, influencing Cu outflow characteristics during annealing. Different Cu/W bilayer units within the NML stack offer an innovative pathway for producing Cu/W nanocomposites with graded thermal and mechanical properties.
