The formation mechanism of metal-ceramic interlayer interface during laser powder bed fusion

Liming Yao et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted on LPBF of powdered Ti on Al2O3 substrate, and the interface formation was studied using a multi-material fluid dynamics model. The results showed that under LPBF's conduction mode, the melt pool was relatively shallow with a flat interlayer interface. The formation of a thin sheath of molten Al2O3 acted as a lubricating film for the molten Ti, leading to Rayleigh instability. However, the presence of keyhole formation resulted in a wavy interlayer interface.

Empirical Implementation of the Steinmetz Equation to Compute Eddy Current Loss in Soft Magnetic Composite Components

Mehmet C. Kulan et al.

Summary: Finite element analysis is crucial in accurately predicting losses in magnetic materials and is important in designing electromagnetic devices. Soft magnetic composites, an alternative to silicon steel laminations, have unique microstructures that require different modeling approaches. This study evaluates the trends in modeling soft magnetic composite core losses and discusses the challenges in estimating and using Steinmetz core loss coefficients.

A micropillar compression investigation into the plastic flow properties of additively manufactured alloys

Shi-Hao Li et al.

Summary: Solidification cells and a high density of dislocations play important roles in determining the plastic properties of additively manufactured alloys. It has been found that the high density of dislocations, arranged in a network or distributed uniformly, determines the yield strength of the alloys, while the variations in cell boundaries have no effect.

Fracture and fatigue in additively manufactured metals

Thorsten Hermann Becker et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of structure-property correlations in AM alloys, highlighting the unique aspects of microstructures, process-related attributes, and their effects on mechanical properties. The interplay between microstructures and process attributes in determining structural integrity of AM alloys is emphasized, along with strategies for improving damage tolerance through processing conditions and post-processing treatments. Gaps in understanding fatigue and fracture in AM alloys are identified as future research avenues for widespread deployment and reliable design of engineering components.

Strong Dependence of Magnetic Damping and Magnetization on Deposition Temperature in Highly Magnetostrictive NiZnAl Ferrite Thin Films

Qin Du et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effect of growth temperature on the magnetic properties of Zn/Al co-doped nickel ferrite thin films, revealing that the saturate magnetization and damping linewidth decrease as the deposition temperature increases. Further optimization of film thickness can lead to a smaller FMR linewidth.

Grain Size Influence on the Magnetic Property Deterioration of Blanked Non-Oriented Electrical Steels

Lucas Boehm et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of grain size on iron losses in non-oriented electrical steel sheets after the blanking process. The results show that increasing grain size leads to increased iron losses in 0.25 mm thick sheets, while iron losses decrease in 0.5 mm thick sheets, contrary to previous research. This can be explained by the interplay of dislocation annihilation and transgranular fracturing.

Design and Qualification of Pr-Fe-Cu-B Alloys for the Additive Manufacturing of Permanent Magnets

Lukas Schaefer et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of high coercivity in Pr21Fe73.5Cu2B3.5 and Nd21Fe73.5Cu2B3.5 alloys through the use of suction casting technique, conventional L-PBF processing, and subsequent annealing treatment. The resulting microstructure consists of hard magnetic grains embedded in a matrix phase, with Pr21Fe73.5Cu2B3.5 exhibiting higher coercivity due to a finer grain size distribution of the Pr2Fe14B phase.
