A modeling approach to estimate 3H discharge from rivers: Comparison of discharge from the Fukushima Dai-ichi and inventory in seawater in the Fukushima coastal region

Kazuyuki Sakuma et al.

Summary: Estimation of H-3 discharge from river catchments in Fukushima coastal region shows significantly higher values than the discharge from Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, indicating the importance of H-3 discharge through rivers. This estimation is useful for evaluating and predicting H-3 concentrations and inventories in the coastal region.

Discharge of treated Fukushima nuclear accident contaminated water: macroscopic and microscopic simulations

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the diffusion process of the treated Fukushima nuclear accident contaminated water to be discharged into the Pacific Ocean from 2023, from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives. The results show that tritium will spread to the entire North Pacific in 1200 days, highlighting the importance of formulating global coping strategies.

Dynamics of Radioactive Cesium in Coastal Area Linked with River Discharge

Toshiharu Misonou et al.

Summary: The dynamics of future radioactive cesium and its distribution in the coastal area of Fukushima Prefecture require an evaluation of radioactive cesium supply from river discharge. Particulate radioactive cesium brought by floods could potentially have a significant impact on the coastal area. The study found that during torrential rain, the influence of rivers on coastal areas is extremely limited, with local increases in cesium concentration observed only at specific monitoring points.

Impact of Extreme Typhoon Events on the Fluvial Discharge of Particulate Radiocesium in Fukushima Prefecture

Takahiro Nakanishi et al.

Summary: Two huge typhoons in October 2019 caused significant flood damage in Fukushima Prefecture. The study quantitatively evaluated sediment and Cs-137 discharges from the Ukedo River catchment over 6 years, showing that the typhoon events contributed to the majority of the annual discharges. However, the impact of Cs-137 discharge on the coastal area was extremely limited, accounting for only 0.1% of the Cs-137 deposition in the catchment.

Planned release of contaminated water from the Fukushima storage tanks into the ocean: Simulation scenarios of radiological impact for aquatic biota and human from seafood consumption

R. Bezhenar et al.

Summary: The study assessed the radiological impact of planned release of contaminated water stored in tanks near the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant on human and aquatic biota. Predicted concentrations of activity in marine products in the future will not exceed food safety limits in Japan, with the maximum effective dose to humans being less than 1 mu Sv per year, primarily contributed by I-129 and C-14. The maximum absorbed doses to non-human biota are in the range of 0.05 to 20 mu Gy per year, indicating no deleterious effects are expected.

Transport and dispersion of tritium from the radioactive water of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant

Chang Zhao et al.

Summary: Japan plans to release over 1.2 million tons of radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean, posing a threat to marine ecosystems and human health. Studies show that in short-term release scenarios, the peak plume with high tritium concentration can reach the northeastern Pacific, while in long-term release scenarios, the contaminated water plume is confined to coastal regions east of Japan.
