A method to remove cellulose from rich organic samples to analyse microplastics

Agata Egea-Corbacho et al.

Summary: Knowing the amount of microplastics in wastewater is crucial. However, the presence of high concentrations of cellulose hinders the detection and quantification of microplastics. Existing research focuses on removing organic matter, with little attention given to removing cellulose. This study introduces a method that combines advanced oxidation treatments for organic matter removal with cellulose removal treatment, effectively reducing cellulose in wastewater samples.

Separation of microplastics from mass-limited samples by an effective adsorption technique

Janika Reineccius et al.

Summary: The study compared different digestion and separation methods for microplastics, finding that an adsorption-based technique was the most gentle and effective isolation method with a high microplastic recovery rate. By analyzing samples from the South China Sea, it was discovered that sediment samples contained 0-9 microplastic items per 10 g dry weight, while water samples had 17-25 items per m3.

The extraction of microplastics from sediments: An overview of existing methods and the proposal of a new and green alternative

A. Bellasi et al.

Summary: Microplastics contamination is a concerning environmental issue, with water environments serving as a final sink for dispersed MPs. The distribution of microplastics in water ecosystems varies due to factors like polymer properties and environmental conditions, with sediment being highly impacted. Despite increasing awareness, the lack of standard protocols hampers proper quantification of dispersed particles in sediments, limiting our knowledge of their environmental implications and toxicological effects.

Anthropogenic particles in sediment from an Arctic fjord

France Collard et al.

Summary: Research on plastic pollution in the Arctic is limited, with this study focusing on microplastics and other anthropogenic particles like dyed fibers in sediments from Kongsfjorden. Analysis revealed the presence of various APs, including microplastics, with different sizes and distribution patterns. This data provides insight into the presence of plastic and other APs in a remote fjord in Svalbard.

Microplastic extraction from sediments established? - A critical evaluation from a trace recovery experiment with a custom-made density separator

Maurits Halbach et al.

Summary: Microplastics are widely distributed in various environmental compartments, with sediments being a major sink. The behavior of extraction seems to be density-related, with higher density polymers showing higher extraction efficiencies. Early biofouling can enhance recoveries of some polar polymers but may have negative effects on apolar polymers.
