Trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean sediments: Concentration ranges as a tool for quality control of large data collections

M. Lipizer et al.

Summary: Assessing marine pollution status requires comparable and harmonized data from multiple institutions in different countries. Standardized data management and quality control are crucial for coherent environmental evaluation. This study focuses on improving quality control procedures for sediment pollution data in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and validates the approach using a regional dataset.

Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn in coastal and transitional waters of Greece and assessment of background concentrations: Results from 6 years implementation of the Water Framework Directive

Eleni Tzempelikou et al.

Summary: The study in Greece evaluated the dissolved trace metal concentrations in coastal and transitional waters over a 6-year period. It found that Ni and Cu contamination affect the highest number of water bodies, with transitional water bodies of estuaries and wetlands being more affected by metal contamination than coastal water bodies. The research contributes to the development of Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) and the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in Greece.

Assessment of physicochemical parameters and heavy metal concentration in the effuents of sewage treatment plants in Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia

Hassien M. Alnashiri

Summary: Heavy metals and other hazardous compounds such as Cd, Cu, Mn, Zn were detected in sewage waters from three cities in Jazan Region of Saudi Arabia. The elevated levels of these metals in the aquatic ecosystem could have direct impact on the Red Sea marine ecosystem and vegetation in and around the Jazan Region.
