Occurrence of pharmaceuticals in seafood from two Brazilian coastal areas: Implication for human risk assessment

Flavia Mello et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals (PhACs), considered emerging contaminants, were found in seafood from two Brazilian coastal areas, with Ibuprofen, simvastatin, and carbamazepine being the main bioaccumulated PhACs. The contamination profile varied among different seafood species, but overall, consumption of seafood from these areas seems to be safe in terms of the PhACs studied.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in bottled water and assessment of the associated risks

Chengfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of 187 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in bottled water samples, with 44 compounds belonging to 14 PPCP categories detected. The thermal stabilities of the PPCPs were determined, revealing that only 35 out of the 187 compounds were degraded significantly after boiling for 5 minutes. Despite low risk levels overall, certain PPCPs showed higher risk levels in infants compared to other life stages, highlighting the need for further research on the toxicity of PPCP mixtures and their effects on human intestinal microbiota.

Summary: Human presence is impacting plateau ecosystems, leading to high bioaccumulation ability of PPCPs in plateau rivers. Natural colloids play a crucial role in regulating the behavior of PPCPs and the trophic dilution effect in the food web influences biological risk assessments.

Occurrence and removal of chemicals of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants and their impact on receiving water systems

Oksana Golovko et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are major sources of Emerging Chemicals of Concern (CECs) in aquatic environments, impacting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated 164 CECs at 15 locations, with CEC concentrations varying widely between WWTPs. The K-d of CECs correlated with K-ow, allowing for prediction of their distribution in water and solids. WWTP effluent had higher CEC concentrations than upstream waters, potentially impacting downstream ecosystems.

Exposure to a common antidepressant alters crayfish behavior and has potential subsequent ecosystem impacts

Alexander J. Reisinger et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to SSRI antidepressants can lead to bolder behavior and increased time spent foraging in crayfish. Crayfish exposed to SSRI also had an impact on water column chlorophyll and benthic organic matter, but did not affect whole-stream metabolism.
