Regional and fine-scale variability in composition and structure of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts: Geological characterization of 25 drill cores from the Marcus-Wake seamounts

Hikari Hino et al.

Summary: Hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts in the northwestern Pacific seamounts are potential future sources of strategic metals, with regional and fine-scale variations in composition and structure. Through geological and geochemical analyses in a selected area, it was found that the crusts exhibit almost continuous stratigraphic growth since the middle Miocene or earlier, with significant variations in metal concentration, growth structure, and mineralogy. The fine-scale stratigraphic variations across seamount areas approximately 1000 km apart are surprisingly well-correlated, indicating the importance of stratigraphic analysis for compositional characterization of ferromanganese crusts on various scales.

Visualisation method for the broad distribution of seafloor ferromanganese deposits

Shiki Machida et al.

Summary: The study shows that using a vessel-equipped multi-narrow beam echo sounder to determine the acoustic backscatter intensity of the seafloor can provide a reliable threshold for distinguishing different geological types. By integrating multiple datasets and combining thresholds, visualization and quantitative estimations of the distribution of ferromanganese deposits covering vast areas can be achieved. This method, requiring minimal data processing and ground-truth observations, offers rapid and comprehensive reconnaissance exploration in deep-sea exploration.

Assessment of acoustic backscatter intensity surveying on deep-sea ferromanganese crust: Constraints from Weijia Guyot, western Pacific Ocean

Hui-qiang Yao et al.

Summary: This paper reports near-bottom observation data from the manned deep submersible Jiaolong in Weijia Guyot and Magellan Seamounts in the Western Pacific Ocean, identifying three substrate types and their spatial distributions, as well as their correlation with acoustic backscatter intensity data. Acoustic backscatter intensity surveying shows potential value in delineation and evaluation of crust resources, although further methodology development is needed.
