Assessment of single and combined effects of bisphenol-A and its analogue bisphenol-S on biochemical and histopathological responses of sea cucumber Holothuria poli

Maroua Jenzri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) on sea cucumbers. The results showed that exposure to BPA and BPS caused oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, and histopathological lesions in the respiratory tree of the sea cucumbers. BPA had greater effects on oxidative stress and neurotoxicity compared to BPS.

The toxic effect of bisphenol AF and nanoplastic coexposure in parental and offspring generation zebrafish

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the combined effects of nanoplastics and bisphenol AF (BPAF) on zebrafish were investigated. The results showed that both single BPAF exposure or BPAF and nanoplastic coexposure affected the reproductive and locomotor behavior of adult zebrafish, as well as the hatching rate, mortality, body length, and locomotor behavior of offspring zebrafish, especially in later spawns. The exacerbated accumulation of BPAF in parental and offspring zebrafish in the BPAF+nm group may contribute to the accelerated toxic effects observed.

Preliminary study on the role of aryl hydrocarbon receptor in the neurotoxicity of three typical bisphenol compounds (BPA, BPS and TBBPA) at environmentally relevant concentrations to adult zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Jing Shan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role of AhR in the neurotoxicity of adult zebrafish induced by three environmentally relevant doses of bisphenol compounds (BPA, BPS, TBBPA). The results showed that exposure to bisphenol compounds affected the expression of AhR-related genes, neural function-related genes, oxidative stress-related genes, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes in zebrafish brain tissue. The AhR inhibitor CH could antagonize these effects compared to the groups exposed to bisphenols alone.

In vitro and in silico evaluation of inhibitory effects of bisphenol derivatives on acetylcholinesterase of electric eel (Electrophorus electricus L.)

Can Yilmaz et al.

Summary: The inhibitory effects of bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) on electric eel acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were studied. Both compounds showed non-competitive inhibition, with BPA being more potent. Molecular docking analyses revealed their interaction with residues in the active site gorge. It was also discovered that BPS is a significant inhibitor of AChE, and this effect may apply to AChE of most other bony fish.

Long-term exposure to bisphenol A and its analogues alters the behavior of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) and causes hepatic injury

Xueyou Li et al.

Summary: Bisphenols (BPA, BPF, and BPAF) have adverse effects on aquatic organisms and their hepatic toxicity in marine fish is not fully understood. In this study, exposure to these bisphenols affected the growth, liver histology, antioxidant defense mechanisms, and gene expression profiles in marine medaka. BPAF exposure showed higher body weight, lower survival rate, vacuolization and lesions in the liver, altered antioxidant enzyme activity, anxiolytic effects, reduced swimming distance, and changes in gene expression levels. Overall, bisphenols can adversely affect the growth and metabolism of marine medaka.

Effects of bisphenol AF on growth, behavior, histology and gene expression in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma)

Yuebi Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Bisphenol AF (BPAF) on behavior, growth, reproductive organs, gene expression, and reproduction in female marine medaka. The results indicated that BPAF exposure affected swimming speed, body weight, ovarian maturation, lipid metabolism, immune response, and the expression of genes related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. In addition, BPAF inhibited spawning behavior. These findings highlight the potential risks of BPAF exposure on aquatic organisms.

Bisphenol S leads to cytotoxicity-induced antioxidant responses and oxidative stress in isolated rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss) hepatocytes

Burak Kaptaner et al.

Summary: The study found that BPS causes cytotoxicity in rainbow trout hepatocytes and leads to oxidative stress, resulting in hepatotoxicity in fish. Therefore, the use of BPS as a safe alternative in industry instead of BPA should be re-evaluated in the future for environmental health.
