Metals and oxidative stress in aquatic decapod crustaceans: A review with special reference to shrimp and crabs

Martin Gabriel Frias-Espericueta et al.

Summary: Aquatic decapod crustaceans exhibit varied antioxidant defense strategies in response to metal-induced oxidative stress. Antioxidant enzymes may be induced or inhibited by metals depending on species, concentration, and exposure time. Superoxide dismutase, for example, shows increased activity at low metal levels and exposure durations, but is inhibited at higher concentrations and longer exposure times.

Toxicity evaluation and oxidative stress response of fumaronitrile, a persistent organic pollutant (POP) of industrial waste water on tilapia fish (Oreochromis mossambicus)

K. Chinnadurai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of fumaronitrile exposure on freshwater tilapia fish through tissue damaging, oxidative stress enzymes, and histopathological studies. The results showed significant changes in tissue damage enzymes and antioxidative enzymes in gill, liver, and muscle cells of the fish after 90 days of exposure to fumaronitrile. The histopathological abnormalities observed in the treated fish indicated severe histological changes caused by fumaronitrile exposure, highlighting the risks associated with this environmental pollutant.

Does persistent organic pollutant PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) negative impacts on the aquatic invertebrate organism, Astacus leptodactylus [Eschscholtz, 1823]

Nesli Belek et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of sublethal concentrations of PFOS on narrow-clawed crayfish. The results showed that PFOS exposure led to a decrease in total haemocyte counts and an increase in haemolymph total antioxidant status. Histopathological alterations were observed in hepatopancreas and gill tissues. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the early toxicological effects of PFOS on freshwater ecosystems, and suggest that A. leptodactylus is a reliable model for studying histopathological alterations and enzyme activities in toxicology studies.

Fekadu Yadetie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of Arctic and sub-arctic pelagic organisms to crude oil contaminants. Transcriptome analysis shows differential expression of genes involved in cellular pathways in copepods exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Different copepod species show different responses, with some genes and pathways being more strongly induced in certain species.

Summary: Various synthetic organic compounds belonging to different chemical classes and possessing diverse physicochemical properties are frequently found in marine environments. These pollutants, such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, PCBs, and PAHs, have been detected in the global marine system, exerting direct and indirect effects on marine biota. Studies have explored the lethal and sub-lethal impacts of selected organic-synthetic stressors on different marine plant and animal species, as well as summarized the individual and combined effects observed or predicted after exposure to chemical mixtures of such contaminants. Future research needs are highlighted based on knowledge gaps in the literature.
