Integrated research in the Arctic - Ecosystem linkages and shifts in the northern Bering Sea and eastern and western Chukchi Sea

Matthew R. Baker et al.

Summary: Arctic marine ecosystems are experiencing rapid change, characterized by earlier ice retreat, a longer ice-free season, and the loss of multi-year ice. These changes have led to increased exchange of marine species between the North Pacific and Arctic systems, particularly in pelagic species initially, and more recently in groundfishes and other demersal taxa. This Special Issue volume integrates research from US and Russian waters to study the physical processes and mechanisms in the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea marine ecosystems, documenting shifts in fish stocks and presenting new methodological approaches. The results provide evidence for accelerated sea-ice decline, climate-driven shifts in species distribution, and ecosystem transformation in the warming Arctic.

Trait-based assessment of polychaete assemblages distinguishes macrofaunal community structure among four distinct benthic eco-regions on a shallow arctic shelf

Brittany R. Charrier et al.

Summary: The taxonomic and functional composition of infaunal benthic communities play a crucial role in ecosystem function in the Arctic. This study investigated spatial patterns in macrofauna on the northern Bering and southern Chukchi Sea continental shelves and found distinct groups based on polychaete families and functional guilds. These groups were associated with variations in habitat characteristics, indicating variation in ecosystem function across the study area.

Benthic bacteria and archaea in the North American Arctic reflect food supply regimes and impacts of coastal and riverine inputs

Alexis M. Walker et al.

Summary: Benthic bacteria and archaea play a crucial role in organic matter degradation and nutrient cycling, and their community structure can reflect environmental conditions. By sequencing marine sediments, three distinct assemblages were identified, with one assemblage enriched in deeper sediments and containing a higher proportion of anaerobic taxa. Overall, sediment grain size, organic matter quantity and composition, and bioturbation influence the distribution of prokaryotic communities. Regional differences in environmental controls were observed in the North American Arctic, with food-supply regimes and nearshore heterogeneity being major drivers of prokaryote communities.

Composition of marine nematode communities across broad longitudinal and bathymetric gradients in the Northeast Chukchi and Beaufort Seas

Sarah L. Mincks et al.

Summary: This study investigates the community structure of meiofaunal nematodes in the Arctic, finding differences between the Northeast Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea, with organic matter influencing community structure. Diversity indices were higher in the Beaufort Sea, with maximum values in the eastern area, while the western area was dominated by Sabatieria.

Benthic hotspots on the northern Bering and Chukchi continental shelf: Spatial variability in production regimes and environmental drivers

Zhixuan Feng et al.

Summary: This study identified benthic biological hotspots with high macrofaunal biomass on the highly advective continental shelf from the northern Bering Sea to the northeast Chukchi Sea, and investigated the environmental factors influencing carbon export to the benthos. Multiple modeling approaches were used to understand the effects of biological production and physical transport processes on supplying biogenic materials to these hotspots. The data synthesis and process-based modeling provided new insights into the oceanographic processes that produce organic matter in sea ice and the water column, and how it impacts benthic communities in the Pacific Arctic region.

Does feeding type matter? Contribution of organic matter sources to benthic invertebrates on the Arctic Chukchi Sea shelf

Ann-Christine Zinkann et al.

Summary: The study found that benthic invertebrates in the Arctic Chukchi Sea utilize organic matter sources in a genus-specific rather than feeding type-specific manner. This suggests that feeding modes alone may not fully explain the varied usage of essential amino acids among benthic organisms, highlighting the importance of considering additional characteristics such as mobility, selectivity of available nutrients, and assimilation efficiency. High proportions of terrestrial essential amino acids were found in most benthic genera across all feeding types, indicating the significant role of terrestrial organic matter in supporting benthic consumers in the Arctic.

Changes to benthic community structure may impact organic matter consumption on Pacific Arctic shelves

Brittany R. Jones et al.

Summary: Changes in species composition and biomass of Arctic benthic communities are predicted in response to environmental changes. Oxygen consumption rates are used to quantify metabolic demand differences among species, with high metabolic demand for certain species. There is variability in carbon demand and allometric scaling of respiration rate with biomass among species, suggesting observed shifts in dominant macrofaunal taxa will impact benthic community carbon demand. Ecosystem models may need to differentiate between communities with different oxygen demands.
