Expanded utilisation of microalgae in global aquafeeds

Muhammad A. B. Siddik et al.

Summary: The use of novel ingredients in aquafeeds is essential for the growth and intensification of aquaculture. Microalgae are widely used in aquaculture for various purposes, including as live feed, as a replacement for marine ingredients, and for the production of pigments like astaxanthin. Compounds in microalgae such as fatty acids, amino acids, proteins, fibers, pigments, vitamins, and minerals have great biological value for fish and shellfish. This review discusses the processing of microalgae as aquafeed, the health benefits of microalgae compounds, and the challenges and future perspectives of commercial use.

Recent progress and challenges in CRISPR-Cas9 engineered algae and cyanobacteria

Vikas Kumar Patel et al.

Summary: Photosynthetic microorganisms like microalgae and cyanobacteria have been researched for their ability to produce biofuels and bio-based chemicals through metabolic manipulation. The CRISPR-Cas9 system has shown promise in editing the genomes of various species of these microorganisms, but technical difficulties, such as Cas9 toxicity, have hindered progress. This review discusses advances in CRISPR-Cas9 technology and applications, as well as challenges and improvements in genome editing methods for algae and cyanobacteria.

Techno-economic identification of production factors threatening the competitiveness of algae biodiesel

Josef Marousek et al.

Summary: The majority view is that microalgae is the most promising feedstock for biodiesel production as well as wastewater treatment. Microalgae biodiesel, with proper additives, shows better performance than conventional fossil fuels and is environmentally friendly. However, there is a lack of reviewable reports to support claims about low microalgae production costs and the potential for cost reduction through mass production. This study focuses on the financial aspects of microalgae production through bioreactors and explores alternative methods such as natural habitat harvesting, biogas production, and nutrient regeneration, taking into account potential synergies. The analysis confirms that the cost-competitiveness of microalgae biodiesel business depends on production costs, particularly the running cost of production technology, and highlights the current absence of technology capable of producing microalgae at a price that allows for a profitable algae biodiesel business.

Mass Cultivation of Microalgae: I. Experiences with Vertical Column Airlift Photobioreactors, Diatoms and CO2 Sequestration

Hans Chr Eilertsen et al.

Summary: From 2015 to 2021, an optimization experiment was conducted in Finnfjord AS, North Norway, to cultivate diatoms in mass using vertical column airlift photobioreactors with natural and artificial light. The experiment showed that large diatoms could achieve higher production, lower self-shadowing, and better protein quality when cultivated continuously with high light utilization efficiency and CO2 uptake.

Sustainable Microalgae and Cyanobacteria Biotechnology

Jenny-Fabiola Lopez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Marine organisms are a valuable source of new compounds with remarkable biotechnological properties, and their industrial production is attracting special attention. These organisms produce many biologically active molecules, including antioxidants, immunostimulants, antivirals, antibiotics, fatty acids, peptides, proteins, biofuels, and pigments. Several factors, such as species selection, nutrient supply, photobioreactor type, and downstream processes, need to be considered in the production of bioactive compounds. Different production schemes are used for biofuels/biomass and human health products. Microalgae have various applications, determined by their growth and product yield. OMICS technologies facilitate the development of therapeutic recombinant proteins with strain selection based on proteomic profiling. Microalgal expression systems offer advantages for sustainable applications.

Environmental Impacts of Large-Scale Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) Production in Hellisheidi Geothermal Park Iceland: Life Cycle Assessment

Asaf Tzachor et al.

Summary: The cultivation of Spirulina algae in geothermally powered photobioreactors is proposed as a resource efficient and zero-carbon alternative to conventional beef meat. A life cycle assessment conducted in Iceland shows that the production of Spirulina biomass requires significantly less land, water, and emits fewer greenhouse gases compared to conventionally produced beef. Furthermore, controlled environment agriculture ensures consistent nutritional profile year-round, and the Spirulina contains all essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.

Influence of photobioreactor set-up on the survival of microalgae inoculum

Alessia Bani et al.

Summary: Cultivating specific microalgae in an industrial setting is challenging due to contamination and economic cost considerations. Understanding the ecology of microalgae cultivation is necessary for stable production. Results show that a closed photobioreactor configuration is essential for maintaining a specific microalgae inoculum, while other systems develop a different eukaryotic community due to contamination and higher fitness of contaminants.

Summary: The main hurdles in mechanized transportation are the depletion of fossil fuels and the high cost of alternative plant-based substrates for producing biofuels. Biofuels emerged as effective alternatives to reduce pollution caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Microalgae, as a third-generation feedstock, are an excellent resource due to their fast growth rate and higher carbohydrate content, providing a solution to the challenges faced by conventional agricultural crops.

Expanding ecological assessment by integrating microorganisms into routine freshwater biomonitoring

M. Sagova-Mareckova et al.

Summary: The importance and potential of utilizing microbes as bioindicators in water quality monitoring are discussed in this review. Molecular methods have revealed microbial diversity and new metabolic pathways, which can improve our understanding of environmental processes, serving as a solid foundation for novel monitoring programs. Microbial community dynamics are highlighted as a missing link essential for comprehending rapid changes in aquatic ecosystem structure and function, suggesting they should be addressed in future environmental monitoring of freshwater ecosystems.
