Macro-nutrients recovery from liquid waste as a sustainable resource for production of recovered mineral fertilizer: Uncovering alternative options to sustain global food security cost-effectively

Bogna Sniatala et al.

Summary: This article reviews the technical applicability of various water technologies for recovering macro-nutrients from wastewater, focusing on phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and potassium (K). The strengths and drawbacks of technologies such as struvite precipitation, adsorption, ion exchange, and membrane filtration are evaluated and compared. The study also explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimizing treatment processes and scaling up water treatment plants to facilitate the reuse of recovered materials for ensuring food security.

Protein and Long-Chain n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Recovered from Herring Brines upon Flocculation and Flotation-A Case Study

Bita Forghani et al.

Summary: A novel integrated process combining carrageenan-and/or acid-driven flocculation (F) plus dissolved air flotation (DAF) was investigated for the recovery of protein-enriched biomasses from 5% presalting brines and spice brines of herring. The F-DAF technique with carrageenan achieved protein and lipid recoveries of 78% and 38%, respectively, from 5% presalting brine. Without flocculation or with only acidification, protein and lipid recoveries in DAF were significantly lower. The outlined F-DAF recovery system can successfully recover nutrients and flavors from herring process waters.
