A review of carbon isotopes and maturity determinations of paleozoic unconventional shale gases

Feng H. Lu

Summary: Isotope rollover and reversal are common in highly mature unconventional gas systems, and the carbon isotopes of gas compounds can be used to determine gas maturity. This study integrates isotopic and chemical data with traditional maturity methods to define four maturity levels based on carbon isotopes for Paleozoic unconventional gases. The results suggest that as gas maturity increases, carbon isotopes are more influenced by maturity and less affected by source rocks.

Geochemistry of oils and condensates from the lower Eagle Ford formation, South Texas. Part 3: Basin modeling

Clifford C. Walters et al.

Summary: The maturity-dependent properties and compositions of oils and condensates produced from the lower Eagle Ford shales exhibit regional trends with production depth. A pseudo 3D basin model was constructed to test the offset observed in samples from different regions. The model found that present-day thermal maturity correlates with reconstructed maximum burial depth and suggests the basin model could be further refined.

Characteristics of light hydrocarbons under the superimposed influence of biodegradation and subsequent thermal maturation

Yueyi Huang et al.

Summary: Recently, large light oil and condensate reservoirs were discovered in China's Tarim and Junggar basins. These reservoirs experienced complex tectonic movements, resulting in secondary alterations such as biodegradation and water washing. Biodegradation significantly reduces the generation potential of light hydrocarbons, altering the chemical composition and timing of their formation. The study found that carbon isotopic differences decreased with increasing maturity.

Geochemistry of oils and condensates from the lower Eagle Ford formation, south Texas. Part 4: Diamondoids

Clifford C. Walters et al.

Summary: There are various diamondoid indices that can be used to characterize source facies, thermal maturity, oil cracking, mixed oils, and reservoir alteration processes. However, their accuracy and reliability have not been rigorously tested in unconventional oils. In this study, the diamondoid compositions in lower Eagle Ford oils and condensates were analyzed, showing that diamondoid concentrations increase with maturity. Existing diamondoid indices are not diagnostic at lower maturity and are influenced by source facies. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using established diamondoid maturity and source indices to characterize unconventional oils/condensates.

Application of light hydrocarbons for classification and geochemistry characterization of condensates from the Gavbendi High, southwest Iran

Ahmad Reza Rabbani et al.

Summary: Light hydrocarbons were used to study the condensates of Iranian gas condensate fields in Gavbendi High, revealing two distinct genetic families based on their composition and stable carbon isotope data. Group II samples showed a higher contribution from marine organic matter and had a higher thermal maturity compared to Group I samples. Both groups were charged laterally from surrounding withdrawal synclines source kitchens located in the southern area on both sides of the Gavbendi High.

Application of Light Hydrocarbons in Natural Gas Geochemistry of Gas Fields in China

Shipeng Huang et al.

Summary: Light hydrocarbons (LHs) are important components of natural gas and their chemical and isotopic compositions can be used to identify the genetic types, maturity, and source of gas, as well as secondary alterations and migration. This review provides an overview of the genetic mechanisms and factors impacting the geochemical compositions of LHs, and discusses their applications in gas geochemistry research. Three main genetic mechanisms for LH formation are proposed: thermal decomposition, catalytic decomposition, and microbial action.

Insights into catalytic effects of clay minerals on hydrocarbon composition of generated liquid products during oil cracking from laboratory pyrolysis experiments

Meng He et al.

Summary: Experimental results showed that oil cracking in reservoir rocks versus source rocks can be differentiated based on the relative concentrations of C7 hydrocarbons in the cracking products. The distribution of light hydrocarbons in the final products is influenced by the matrix effect from clay minerals and surrounding medium. Different types of source rocks and clay minerals may have varying effects on the cracking products of oil.

Summary: The Cenozoic unconformity above the Late Cretaceous carbonates in the Maverick Basin, Texas, is a unique geological feature. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain this unconformity, and clumped isotope data and organic maturation proxies were used to investigate the thermal history of the area.

Determination of in situ hydrocarbon contents in shale oil plays. Part 1: Is routine Rock-Eval analysis reliable for quantifying the hydrocarbon contents of preserved shale cores?

Jinbu Li et al.

Summary: Accurate determination of in situ hydrocarbon content is crucial for the assessment of shale oil plays. This study found that sample preparation and analysis delay can lead to underestimation of hydrocarbon content, particularly liquid hydrocarbons. Techniques using larger rock pieces are recommended for quantifying hydrocarbon content in preserved shale samples.

Generation temperatures for oils sourced from sulfur-rich kerogens using aromatic and light hydrocarbon isomers

Poorna Srinivasan et al.

Summary: Isomer ratios of certain hydrocarbons can be used to assess thermal maturity and guide petroleum exploration. The commonly used C-7 dimethylpentanes (DMPs) can calculate the temperature of oil generation. However, the calculation may be affected by source mixing, thermochemical sulfate reduction, water washing, and evaporative fractionation. For oils sourced from sulfur-rich kerogens, alternative methods are needed to accurately calculate generation temperatures and maturity.

Produced Gas and Condensate Geochemistry of the Marcellus Formation in the Appalachian Basin: Insights into Petroleum Maturity, Migration, and Alteration in an Unconventional Shale Reservoir

Christopher D. Laughrey

Summary: The Marcellus Formation in North America's Appalachian basin is a highly productive hydrocarbon play, with wet gas and dry gas production. Wet gas is derived from residual gases generated from late oil cracking, while dry gas is mainly composed of overmature methane and ethane/propane cracked from light oil and wet gas. Differences in fluid chemistry and isotope distributions are observed between wet gas and dry gas.

Evolution of carbon isotopic compositions for gas generated in semi-closed pyrolysis system: Reflections on the formation of isotopic abnormal gases

Dongjun Song et al.

Summary: The study found that carbon isotope anomalies in shale gas exhibit different characteristics at different stages of thermal maturation, with partial carbon isotopic reversions produced in laboratory simulations but complete reversions not reproduced. These findings differ slightly from the natural conditions where shale gas typically exhibits full carbon isotope reversal.
