Evolutionary trends in the Mediterranean Nephrolepidina: new chronosubspecies and biostratigraphic constraints

Andrea Benedetti et al.

Summary: This study evaluated several biological characteristics of various populations of Nephrolepidina from the western Mediterranean. The results show that the commonly used indexes are not sufficient to provide biostratigraphic constraints for each chronospecies, but the embryonic size does affect the number of annuli. By including the index of stolonic distalization, the different chronosubspecies of Nephrolepidina from the Mediterranean bioprovince can be clearly separated.

Biostratigraphy and Paleoenvironments of the Pirabas Formation (Neogene, Par acute accent a State-Brazil)

Bianca Tacoronte Gomes et al.

Summary: The Pirabas Formation in eastern Brazilian Amazonia is an important marine Miocene unit with a unique mixture of carbonate and siliciclastic sediments. It contains a diverse range of paleofauna and microfossils, and palynological studies can provide valuable insights into its paleoenvironment. In this study, 17 samples from eight outcrops and one quarry were analyzed, revealing distinct depositional environments and relative ages. The findings suggest the formation was deposited in mesotrophic, shallow marine environments during the late early-Miocene and mesotrophic coastal environments with nearby mangroves during the late middle to late Miocene.

A larger benthic foraminiferal zonation for the Eocene of the Caribbean and central American region

Simon F. Mitchell et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the larger benthic foraminifera of the Eocene period in Jamaica and includes the collection of free specimens and calibration of their occurrence using calcareous nannofossils. The results provide a detailed zonation of the Eocene and show its applicability in the Americas. The study also revises important groups used for the zonation scheme and describes new taxa.

Palaeocene to Miocene southern Tethyan carbonate factories: A meta-analysis of the successions of South-western and Western Central Asia

Summary: This study re-analysed 144 published successions of shallow-water carbonates from the Levant to the Himalayas, and investigated the distribution of carbonate facies and carbonate-producing organisms. Large benthic foraminifera were found to be the most important carbonate producers, while the abundance of colonial corals and red calcareous algae were related to temperature.

Spira mirabilis inHeterostegina: evolutionary and ecological perspectives

Andrea Benedetti

Summary: The morphometric analysis of marginal spiral outlines in Heterostegina populations belonging to the ocalana-matteuccii lineage indicates a full fit with a logarithmic spiral defined by two variables, with the spirals tending to become looser over time. Additionally, there is an increase in Rinc along a phyletic line leading to a neanic acceleration trend in Heterostegina, and ecophenotypical variations are well-constrained in a Rinc-X bivariate plot. The spiral outline appears to tend towards a golden spiral, characterized by a Rinc value of 0.306, suggesting the presence of golden selection in Heterostegininae.

Microfacies evidence for the evolution of Miocene coral-reef environments in Cyprus

Giovanni Coletti et al.

Summary: Cyprus is a suitable location to study how environmental and geological changes affected Miocene coral-reefs, with lower Miocene reefs characterized by higher biodiversity and deeper water compared to upper Miocene reefs. The reduced late Miocene biodiversity may have been caused by changes in the Mediterranean marine environment, possibly in response to global cooling, increased latitudinal gradients and progressive isolation of the basin. Similarities between the Miocene carbonate facies of Cyprus and other Mediterranean regions suggest that environmental changes operated on a wider scale.

Upper Oligocene-Miocene deposits of Eastern Amazonia: Implications for the collapse of Neogene carbonate platforms along the coast of northern Brazil

Afonso Cesar Rodrigues Nogueira et al.

Summary: Mixed carbonate-siliciclastic platforms developed along the Amazonian coast from the Palaeocene onwards, with distinct tectonic settings leading to different evolutionary histories of carbonate accumulation during the Miocene. The shutdown of Miocene carbonate accumulation has been attributed to the influx of siliciclastic fluvial sediment from the Andean Amazon River. The collapse of the carbonate platform by the Barreiras fan delta deposits during the middle Miocene was a result of intense lateritization of degraded deposits following a period of low fluvial inflow and sea-level fall.
