Biostratigraphy and Paleoenvironments of the Pirabas Formation (Neogene, Par acute accent a State-Brazil)

Bianca Tacoronte Gomes et al.

Summary: The Pirabas Formation in eastern Brazilian Amazonia is an important marine Miocene unit with a unique mixture of carbonate and siliciclastic sediments. It contains a diverse range of paleofauna and microfossils, and palynological studies can provide valuable insights into its paleoenvironment. In this study, 17 samples from eight outcrops and one quarry were analyzed, revealing distinct depositional environments and relative ages. The findings suggest the formation was deposited in mesotrophic, shallow marine environments during the late early-Miocene and mesotrophic coastal environments with nearby mangroves during the late middle to late Miocene.

Distribution, morphology and composition of mesophotic 'reefs' on the Amazon Continental Margin

Nicholas F. Vale et al.

Summary: The geomorphology of the Amazon Continental Margin is highly diverse, consisting of reef-like formations influenced by the Amazon River plume and changing sea levels. These structures have been categorized into different sectors based on their distribution and characteristics. Understanding these formations is crucial for studying marine ecosystems and geological processes.

Coral Reef Exposure to Damaging Tropical Cyclone Waves in a Warming Climate

Adele M. Dixon et al.

Summary: This study examines the ability of downscaled cyclones to represent observed cyclone characteristics that affect wave damage to Australian coral reef regions. The research finds spatial uncertainties in downscaled cyclogenesis and track positions limit estimates of reef damage, and the downscaled tracks perform differently for different regions. The study also suggests that there is no clear evidence that cyclones will cause more damage to Australian coral reef regions in the future.

Brazil Wave Climate from a High-Resolution Wave Hindcast

Camila de Sa Cotrim et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed climatology of ocean wind waves in the South Atlantic Ocean using ERA-5 reanalysis and a higher-resolution wave hindcast (ERA-5H). The results show that wind sea waves dominate the nearshore regions, especially along the northern coast of Brazil, while swell waves are more prevalent and carry more energy in the offshore area. The analysis also reveals the influence of different climate indices on wave height patterns.

Changes in sedimentary provenance and climate off the coast of Northeast Brazil since the Last Interglacial

Thiago A. de Sousa et al.

Summary: By analyzing the Sr-Nd isotope ratios and REE concentrations in marine sediments, this study unveils the sedimentary provenance of sediments supplied to the continental slope off the coast of northeastern Brazil over the past 130,000 years, with the main source identified as the Parnaiba sedimentary basin. Fluctuations in geochemical ratios and values were found to be influenced by changes in hydrological regime, relative sea-level, intensity of weathering, and displacements of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The study also suggests that low Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios during glacial periods are likely due to dry conditions, with shifts in rainfall patterns affecting chemical weathering and isotopic fractionation.

Effects of Beach Nourishment Project on Coastal Geomorphology and Mangrove Dynamics in Southern Louisiana, USA

Marcelo Cancela Lisboa Cohen et al.

Summary: RSL rise, decreased fluvial sediment discharge, and increased hurricane activity have contributed to shoreline retreat in Port Fourchon, Louisiana, threatening coastal ecosystems. The study analyzed shoreline dynamics on mangroves and marshes before and after a beach nourishment project in 2013, showing that the project resulted in advancements in the beach barrier but also caused erosion and long-term shoreline retreat.

Atypical, high-diversity assemblages of foraminifera in a mangrove estuary in northern Brazil

Nisan Sariaslan et al.

Summary: The study in mangrove swamps along the Mamanguape River in Brazil found a high species richness of benthic foraminifera, with the largest number of identified species in true mangrove habitats recorded so far. The atypical structure of the foraminiferal fauna in the area provides insights into the environmental factors controlling their composition and offers novel perspectives on reconstructing past mangrove environments.
