Hygroscopic Tendencies of Substances Used as Calibrants for Quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Christopher L. Suiter et al.

Summary: A coulometric Karl Fischer titration was used to evaluate the hygroscopic tendencies of several organic compounds commonly used as calibrants for qNMR spectroscopy. All compounds except dimethyl sulfone showed resistance to changes in water content, making them suitable choices for qNMR experiments. On the other hand, dimethyl sulfone absorbed a significant amount of water over 5 weeks at 100% relative humidity, which could compromise qNMR experiments under certain conditions.
