Stepwise Gradient Copolymers of n-Butyl Acrylate and Isobornyl Acrylate by Emulsion RAFT Copolymerizations

Ishah H. Alshehri et al.

Summary: Gradient copolymers of n-butyl acrylate (nBA) and isobornyl acrylate (IBA) were prepared using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization. The stepwise monomer addition process allowed for pre-specified gradient compositions to be obtained. H-1 NMR characterization revealed the gradient behavior of the copolymers. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that gradient copolymers had broader glass-transition regions compared to homopolymers and statistical copolymers. The thermal properties of the copolymers can be controlled by the choice of comonomer feed composition and the steepness of the comonomer feed.

Investigating the Impact of Polymer Length, Attachment Site, and Charge on Enzymatic Activity and Stability of Cellulase

Thaiesha A. Wright et al.

Summary: The study investigated the conjugation of thermophilic cellulase Cel5a with polymers of different molecular weights. The results showed that increasing the chain length of polymers compatible with the substrate can enhance the enzymatic activity. The bioconjugates conjugated with N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAm) and N,N-dimethyl acrylamide-2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAm/DMAEMA) exhibited nearly 100% activity enhancement. Double conjugation of two polymers to FnCel5a was achieved, but chain length may be a better tool for modulating bioconjugate activity.

Update and critical reanalysis of IUPAC benchmark propagation rate coefficient data

Sabine Beuermann et al.

Summary: An updated and expanded dataset of benchmark propagation rate coefficient (k(p)) data obtained from pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) of 13 vinyl monomers is presented. The data are reanalyzed and revised values of key parameters are provided. Estimates of measurement uncertainties are also given for use in PLP studies that have not been independently replicated.

Effect of Hydrophilic Monomer Distribution on Self-Assembly of a pH-Responsive Copolymer: Spheres, Worms and Vesicles from a Single Copolymer Composition

Junliang Zhang et al.

Summary: A series of copolymers with different composition profiles, ranging from an AA-BA diblock copolymer to a linear gradient poly(AA-grad-BA) copolymer, were synthesized and investigated for their pH-responsive self-assembly behavior. The gradient-like compositions showed reversible changes in size and morphology in response to changes in pH, forming various structures like micelles and vesicles.

Distribution of Alternating Sequences in Methyl Methacrylate/ n-Butyl Acrylate Copolymers Prepared by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Stanislaw Sosnowski et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations showed that statistical copolymers with 1:1 BA/MMA composition have the highest contribution of alternating sequences, while batch ATRP of a 1:1 BA/MMA mixture generates gradient copolymers with diminished fraction of alternating sequences. A method for preparing statistical BA/MMA copolymers with the highest fraction of alternating sequences through normal ATRP copolymerization with MMA feeding was proposed to maximize the amount of alternating sequences in the copolymers.

Summary: The fluorescence properties of the copolymer can be adjusted by rationally designing the copolymer structure. The asymmetric diblock copolymer shows a gradual increase in fluorescent intensity as the environmental pH decreases, in contrast to the limited and stepwise change of its symmetric block counterpart.

Are RAFT and ATRP Universally Interchangeable Polymerization Methods in Network Formation?

Julia Cuthbert et al.

Summary: Polymer networks synthesized by ATRP and RAFT showed differences in properties at both molecular and bulk levels, with ATRP potentially providing better control at longer chain lengths. Both methods resulted in similar properties at shorter chain lengths, indicating control through soluble components like catalyst in ATRP and soluble polymer fractions in RAFT.

Summary: The choice of chain transfer agent plays a crucial role in modulating the dispersity of PVK, with higher loading of less active xanthate leading to higher dispersity. Moreover, the dispersity of the polymer can be further modulated by photodegradation under UV irradiation.
