Stabilization and Specification in Polymer Field-Effect Transistor Semiconductors

Howard E. Katz

Summary: The strong and varied chemical interactions between polymer semiconductors and small molecules, and the electronic consequences of these interactions, make polymer organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) attractive as vapor sensing elements. The wide acceptance and use of OFETs are hindered by their environmental drift and the poor specificity of individual OFETs. Approaches to address these issues include using semiconducting polymers with greater inherent stability, circuits that add further stability, and arrays that generate more specific patterns in response to analyte vapors.

Naphthalene-Diimide-Based Small Molecule Containing a Thienothiophene Linker for n-Type Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Gyeong Seok Lee et al.

Summary: A naphthalene diimide (NDI)-based small molecule with a thienothiophene linker (NDI-TT-NDI) was synthesized for use as a semiconductor layer in solution-processable n-type organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Introduction of the thienothiophene linker improved the planarity of the molecular backbone and resulted in improved film morphology and crystal characteristics. Additional annealing treatment further improved the molecular ordering and crystallinity of the film, leading to enhanced charge transport. The optimized NDI-TT-NDI-based OFET exhibited high electron mobilities and an on/off ratio.

Efficient Charge Transport Driven by Strong Intermolecular Interactions in Cyclopentadithiophene-Based Donor-Acceptor Type Conjugated Copolymers

Jiyoul Lee et al.

Summary: Understanding the charge transport in donor-acceptor (D-A) type copolymers is crucial for designing high-mobility polymers. In this study, the charge transport properties of three D-A type copolymers based on cyclopentadithiophene (CDT) were investigated. It was found that CDT-PTz exhibited the best charge transport, with the lowest energetic disorder and a hole mobility of 0.79 +/- 0.01 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in field-effect transistors. The structural properties of CDT-PTz, including a rigid and planar backbone structure and a strong intramolecular dipole moment, were attributed to noncovalent N-S interactions and the strong electron-withdrawing PTz acceptor unit. These properties resulted in strong intermolecular interactions and enhanced pi-pi stacking, leading to improved mobility in CDT-PTz.

Large area polymer semiconductor sub-microwire arrays by coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet printing for high-performance OFETs

Dazhi Wang et al.

Summary: Large area and highly aligned polymer semiconductor sub-microwires were fabricated using the coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet printing technology. The sub-microwires exhibited smooth morphology, high reproducibility, and controllable width. The organic field effect transistors based on sub-microwires showed significantly higher mobility compared to thin film based devices and the printing technique allows for convenient control of the number of sub-microwires, thereby controlling the performance of the transistors.

Universal electrode for ambipolar charge injection in organic electronic devices

Tanmoy Sarkar et al.

Summary: Ambipolar transistors with balanced performance have been achieved by introducing a new electrode concept capable of efficiently injecting both types of charge carriers into organic semiconductors (OSCs). The new electrode design consists of a mosaic-like structure composed of islands of two metals with high and low work functions. This electrode design has been successfully applied in organic field effect transistors (OFETs) to simplify circuit design and fabricate digital and analogue elements.
