DNA damage and somatic mutations in mammalian cells after irradiation with a nail polish dryer

Maria Zhivagui et al.

Summary: This study reveals that UV-nail polish dryers emit ultraviolet A (UVA) light, which can cause mutations in the genomes of mammalian cells and generate high levels of reactive oxygen species. This confirms the potential risk of developing skin cancer with long-term use of UV-nail polish dryers. Additionally, it demonstrates that the radiation can damage DNA and lead to permanent mutations on the genomes of various cell lines.

Self-healing, reprocessable, degradable, thermadapt shape memory multifunctional polymers based on dynamic imine bonds and their application in nondestructively recyclable carbon fiber composites

Xiaohong Liu et al.

Summary: Traditional epoxy thermosets are widely used but cannot be recycled easily. This paper introduces the development of self-healing and degradable epoxy polymers with dynamic imine bonds. The polymers show self-healing, reprocessability, and thermadapt shape memory properties, and can be degraded through hydrolysis. Moreover, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites prepared with these polymers can be completely degraded under weak acid conditions, enabling non-destructive recycling. This material has potential as a sustainable structural material.

Swelling-induced Mechanochromism in Multinetwork Polymers

Takuma Watabe et al.

Summary: We present a new method for achieving swelling-induced mechanochemistry using a multinetwork (MN) strategy, which allows polymer networks to repeatedly swell with monomers and solvents. The isotropic expansion of the first network (FN) provides sufficient force to drive the mechanochemical scission of a radical-based mechanophore, difluorenylsuccinonitrile (DFSN). The MN polymers not only demonstrate the ability to modify networks through swelling force, but also show tunable reactivity of the dissociative unit through hierarchical network architecture design.

Summary: In this study, we present a wavelength-orthogonal crosslinking method for hydrogel networks using two red-shifted chromophores. The photoreactivity of one chromophore is pH-dependent, and by incorporating a suitable photoacid generator, the activation wavelength of the other chromophore can be selectively controlled. This system was successfully applied to the design of hydrogels with independently tunable stiffness using green or blue light.

Summary: Developing a shape memory polyurethane with high mechanical properties and excellent self-healing is a challenging task in the field of smart materials. In this study, a shape memory polyurethane network terminated with coumarin units was designed and fabricated, showing exceptional mechanical performance and efficient self-healing capability. The network structure and light-induced dynamic reversibility enable the polyurethane to be remolded in liquid state and have plasticity in solid state, allowing for multiple recycling and processing. By combining photolithography, self-healing, and shape memory effect, a multilevel and multidimensional anti-counterfeiting platform with rewritable fluorescent patterns and reconfigurable shapes was achieved, which provides a new encryption approach for intelligent anti-counterfeiting in the future.

Reversible polymerization of carbon dots based on dynamic covalent imine bond

Bin-Bin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, blue-emitting carbon dots with reversible polymerization were successfully designed and constructed for the first time using a Schiff base reaction between tannic acid and ethylenediamine. The formation of carbon dots was attributed to the crosslinking polymerization of precursors caused by imine bond. The reversible depolymerization and polymerization of carbon dots were achieved by pH-controlled imine bond cleavage and re-formation. These properties of reversible fluorescence photoswitching make the carbon dots promising for reversible information encryption.
