Deproteinized bovine bone and freeze-dried bone allograft in sinus floor augmentation: A randomized controlled trial

Isaya Kungvarnchaikul et al.

Summary: The effects of deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) and freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) on bone healing during maxillary sinus floor augmentation were investigated. The FDBA group showed higher gene expression of Opn, Runx2, and Rankl compared to the DBB group. FDBA had an expression pattern similar to native bone and may be clinically preferable over DBB.

Prefabrication technique by preserving a muscular pedicle from masseter muscle as an in vivo bioreactor for reconstruction of mandibular critical-sized bone defects in canine models

Hanieh Nokhbatolfoghahaei et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of the masseter muscle as a natural bioreactor for bone regeneration using beta TCP or PCL/beta TCP scaffolds. The results showed that using the masseter muscle as a bioreactor improved bone regeneration. The composition of the scaffold, pedicle preservation, and treatment with MSCs or rhBMP2 also influenced the rate of new bone formation and scaffold degradation.

Cell-Laden Composite Hydrogel Bioinks with Human Bone Allograft Particles to Enhance Stem Cell Osteogenesis

Hadis Gharacheh et al.

Summary: Composite hydrogel bioink, formulated by incorporating human allograft bone particles in a methacrylated alginate formulation, enhances osteogenesis of adult human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) for bone tissue engineering. The bioink is suitable for extrusion-based 3D bioprinting, and in vitro studies show significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs cultured within the bioprinted composite scaffolds.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube/hydroxyapatite nanocomposite with leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin for bone regeneration in sheep model

Farshid Bastami et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of MWCNT/HA granules with or without L-PRF on bone regeneration in a sheep model. Results showed that there was no significant inflammation around the granules, and new lamellar bone was regenerated. The addition of L-PRF to MWCNT/HA significantly improved new bone formation, while the use of MWCNT/HA granules alone also significantly increased new bone formation compared to control.

Investigation of cell-free poly lactic acid/nanoclay scaffolds prepared via thermally induced phase separation technique containing hydroxyapatite nanocarriers of erythropoietin for bone tissue engineering applications

Majid Salehi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to fabricate erythropoietin (EPO)-releasing poly lactic acid (PLA)/nanoclay (NC)/nanohydroxyaptitite (nHA) as a new scaffold for bone tissue engineering application. The fabricated scaffolds showed acceptable physical properties with sustained release of EPO, good in vitro biocompatibility, and significantly promoted bone formation and vascularization in a rat calvarial model. The presence of osteoblast in the defect confirmed the potential of EPO in inducing mesenchymal stem cells chemotaxis, making PLA/NC/nHA-EPO a promising cell-free bioscaffold for bone tissue regeneration.

In vivo bone regeneration using a bioactive nanocomposite scaffold and human mesenchymal stem cells

Nazanin Andalib et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the use of bioceramics for bone tissue repair and the potential of nanocomposite scaffolds in combination with mesenchymal stem cells for enhancing bone regeneration. The results show that the nanocomposite scaffolds coated with hydroxyapatite and gelatin promote adhesion and mineralization of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells, leading to significant improvement in defect reconstruction. This combination could be a promising treatment for bone lesions and bioimplantation.
