Effects of different concentrations of eugenol in maturation medium on bovine oocytes, oxidative status and preimplantation embryos

Lhara Ricarliany Medeiros de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that a low concentration of eugenol (83 μM) has a significant effect in improving the oxidative status, in vitro maturation, and embryo development. The presence of eugenol at 83 μM showed improved outcomes compared to other treatments, suggesting its potential as a natural antioxidant with promising applications in cattle embryo production.

Antioxidant effect of bioactive compounds isolated from Syzygium aromaticum essential oil on the in vitro developmental potential of bovine oocytes

Lhara Ricarliany Medeiros de Oliveira et al.

Summary: Syzygium aromaticum essential oil (EOSA) is a potential antioxidant supplement that can improve bovine in vitro embryo production (IVEP). This study compared the effects of EOSA and its bioactive compounds on nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation, bioenergetic/oxidative stress parameters, and embryonic development. The results showed that EOSA and its bioactive compounds can enhance the development and quality of bovine embryos.

Association between the morphokinetics of in-vitro-derived bovine embryos and the transcriptomic profile of the derived blastocysts

Shira Yaacobi-Artzi et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between the morphokinetics of developing embryos and the transcriptomic profile of formed blastocysts in cattle. The results showed that synchronous cleavage embryos had a lower blastocyst formation rate compared to asynchronous cleavage embryos, and abnormally cleaved embryos showed lower competency to develop to blastocysts. Microarray analysis revealed differentially expressed genes related to cell cycle, cell differentiation, metabolism, and apoptosis. The findings suggest that an embryo's morphokinetics is associated with its transcriptome profile, which could be relevant for embryo transfer programs.

Optical imaging of cleavage stage bovine embryos using hyperspectral and confocal approaches reveals metabolic differences between on-time and fast-developing embryos

Clara Ana Santos Monteiro et al.

Summary: The study assessed the metabolism of bovine embryos and found that fast-developing embryos exhibited lower metabolic activity on Day 2 and Day 4, but there was no significant difference in DNA damage levels compared to on-time developing embryos.

Effect of antioxidants on preimplantation embryo development in vitro: a review

Sam Zarbakhsh

Summary: Antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting embryos from oxidative stress during in vitro culture, improving embryo development and compensating for the lack of physiological antioxidant system in the artificial environment. Studies have shown that adding antioxidants to embryo culture medium enhances embryo growth in vitro.

The Chemical Compositions, and Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activities of Four Types of Citrus Essential Oils

Xiaocai Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities of essential oils extracted from various citrus fruits. Monoterpene hydrocarbons, particularly limonene, were found to be the major components in all citrus essential oils. The results showed that kumquat essential oil exhibited the best inhibitory effect against certain bacteria, while Nanfeng mandarin essential oil had the highest antioxidant activity. Additionally, the antibacterial activities of the essential oils did not seem to be correlated with their antioxidant activities.

The Function of Cumulus Cells in Oocyte Growth and Maturation and in Subsequent Ovulation and Fertilization

Bongkoch Turathum et al.

Summary: Cumulus cells play a vital role in supporting oocyte growth, maturation, and developmental competence. Their function is essential for oocyte meiotic maturation, ovulation, fertilization, and early embryo development. Understanding the role of cumulus cells is crucial for predicting oocyte quality, embryonic development competence, and pregnancy outcomes in reproductive medicine and infertility treatment.
