Loss of bile salt export pump aggravates lipopolysaccharide-induced liver injury in mice due to impaired hepatic endotoxin clearance

Jelena Remetic et al.

Summary: This study found that absence of Bsep and cholestasis impairs LPS clearance, exacerbating hepatic inflammation. The clearance of LPS is compromised in Bsep KO mice, affecting its uptake into hepatocytes and secretion into canaliculi, resulting in more severe liver injury.

Comparative proteome analysis of the tegument of male and female adult Schistosoma mansoni

Franziska Winkelmann et al.

Summary: The study compared the differences in tegument proteins between adult female and male Schistosoma worms and found that these proteins play different roles in cellular processes, antioxidant mechanisms, phosphorylation, and signal transduction. These findings contribute to understanding the strategies used by the two sexes of worms to evade the host's immune system.

Dynamics of Host Immune Response Development During Schistosoma mansoni Infection

Alice H. Costain et al.

Summary: Schistosomiasis is a globally significant disease, and the severity and pathology of the infection are directly related to the host's immune response. However, the current understanding of the immune trajectory of schistosomiasis during infection and across different tissue sites is not comprehensive and up-to-date. This study investigates the immune responses at different stages of the parasite lifecycle and in three affected tissue sites, and provides novel insights into the transcriptomic changes in the liver during schistosomiasis. The study also highlights the crucial role of CD11c(+) cells in coordinating and regulating Th2 inflammation during infection.

Tetrahydroxylated bile acids improve cholestatic liver and bile duct injury in the Mdr2-/- mouse model of sclerosing cholangitis via immunomodulatory effects

Claudia D. Fuchs et al.

Summary: Loss of Bile salt export pump (Bsep) and subsequent elevation of tetrahydroxylated bile acids (THBAs) have immunomodulatory effects and can improve liver injury in Mdr2(-/-) mice. Feeding Mdr2(-/-) mice with THBA also improves liver injury.

Human serum activates the tegument of female schistosomes and supports recovery from Praziquantel

Franziska Winkelmann et al.

Summary: Schistosomiasis is a devastating parasitic disease, with Schistosoma spp. surviving in the vasculature of human hosts for decades and evolving mechanisms to evade the host's immune response. Female schistosomes' resistance to Praziquantel seems to depend on active proteins in human serum, while different expression profiles of tegument-specific genes indicate different functions of female and male teguments in response to human serum.

Fifty years of the schistosome tegument: discoveries, controversies, and outstanding questions

R. Alan Wilson et al.

Summary: The review traces the development of knowledge about the tegument of schistosomes from early cytological advances to modern proteomic analyses. While insights have been gained into the nature of proteins in the tegument and how schistosomes interact with hosts, many aspects of tegument function remain unanswered. Current controversies surrounding the tegument's role in extracellular vesicle production and glycolytic enzyme coverage are evaluated in light of cytological and proteomic knowledge.
