Late Cretaceous-Paleogene orogenic build-up of the Ecuadorian Andes: Review and discussion

Etienne Jaillard

Summary: A review of tectonic events in northern Peru and Ecuador reveals three events from late Campanian to late Paleocene age. Each event resulted in uplift of the South-American continental margin and sedimentary hiatus in the backarc zone. It is proposed that the Ecuadorian Andes formed from the evolution of a western, accreted oceanic material wedge, followed by the formation of an eastern orogenic wedge about 25 million years ago. This explains the tectonic and sedimentary evolution of the Ecuadorian-north Peruvian margin.

Geochemistry of Cretaceous basalts from the Ontong Java Plateau: Implications for the off-axis plume-ridge interaction

Shuang-Shuang Chen et al.

Summary: The volcanic rocks from the Ontong Java Plateau exhibit unique geochemical compositions, suggesting potential influence from off-axis ridge-plume interactions. Compared to normal mid-ocean-ridge basalts, these samples show significantly enriched isotopes, indicating they may be a distinct result of off-axis ridge-plume interactions.

Jambalo blueschist and greenschist protoliths in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes and their tectonic implications for Late Cretaceous Caribbean-South American interactions

Andres Bustamante et al.

Summary: Whole-rock geochemistry and Nd isotopes were used to study the nature and metamorphic conditions of the Jambal?o blueschists in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, indicating that these rocks may represent a unique and coherent block exposed to different degrees of retrograde metamorphism. The geochemical composition suggests similar protoliths for blueschists and greenschists, with evidence of subduction zone sedimentary input or crustal contamination. The Jambal?o schists may represent the youngest exposure of high-pressure metamorphic rocks along the Andes, recording Late Cretaceous Caribbean and South American convergence.

Jurassic to Early Paleogene sedimentation in the Amazon region of Ecuador: Implications for the paleogeographic evolution of northwestern South America

Cristian Vallejo et al.

Summary: This study reviews the Jurassic to Paleocene geological and paleogeographic evolution of the Ecuadorian foreland, providing new insights into sedimentary systems, stratigraphic framework, depositional ages, and sediment dispersal patterns. The research highlights the development of marine deposits, deltaic systems, and fluvial systems in eastern Ecuador over different geological periods, shedding light on the regional tectonic events and drainage reorganization during the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene.
