Band-edge-enhanced tunable random laser using a polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystal

Hongbo Lu et al.

Summary: Electrically tunable random laser action is achieved in a cavity-free structure, where the polymer network deformation under an electric field results in a gradient distribution of the cholesteric liquid crystal pitch, widening the bandgap and changing the random laser wavelength accordingly, offering new possibilities for highly efficient incoherent light sources.

High-Reflective Templated Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Filters

Yao Gao et al.

Summary: The article introduces a high-reflectivity cholesteric liquid crystal filter with a single-layer template that can reflect both left- and right-handed polarized light, and red, green, and blue CLC filters were fabricated using templating technology with good wavelength consistency. Additionally, a multi-phase liquid crystal filter with high reflectance was demonstrated by the single-layer templating technology, showing great potential applications in the optical community, reflective display, and lasing.

Toward Application of Liquid Crystalline Elastomer for Smart Robotics: State of the Art and Challenges

Dandan Sun et al.

Summary: LCEs are lightly crosslinked polymers that combine liquid crystalline order and rubber elasticity, making them preferred candidates for actuators, artificial muscles, sensors, smart robots, or other intelligent devices due to their unique anisotropic behavior and reversible shape responses to external stimulation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the basic action, control mechanisms, phase transitions, and the structure-property correlation of LCEs for applications in actuators and other smart devices, while also discussing the synthesis and processing of liquid crystal elastomer, as well as highlighting current challenges and future opportunities in this field. Recent progress in material design and advanced applications outline a vision for the application of LCEs in the next generation smart robots or automatic action systems.
