Hydrodynamic disturbance controls microbial community assembly and biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments

Ya-Jou Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between microbial community composition and biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments exposed to varying levels of hydrodynamic disturbance. The findings suggest that hydrodynamic disturbance plays a critical role in controlling microbial community assembly and biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments. The study provides insights into the mechanisms underlying the interactions between microbial communities and biogeochemical dynamics in these unique environments.

Sources and cycling of nitrogen revealed by stable isotopes in a highly populated large temperate coastal embayment

Wei Wen Wong et al.

Summary: The study utilized stable and radiogenic isotopes along with nitrogen concentrations to evaluate nitrogen sources and cycling processes in Port Phillip Bay, Australia, highlighting the importance of terrestrial-coastal interactions and submarine groundwater discharge as significant pathways of nitrogen inputs. The high nitrogen concentrations were attributed to nitrified sewage effluent, atmospheric deposition, and groundwater and sewage inputs. More efforts are needed to quantify the relative contributions of multiple nitrogen input pathways in future research.

Technical note: Inexpensive modification of Exetainers for the reliable storage of trace-level hydrogen and carbon monoxide gas samples

Philipp A. Nauer et al.

Summary: Atmospheric trace gases such as H-2, CO, and CH4 are vital for microbial metabolism and biogeochemical cycles. Reliable storage of low-volume discrete gas samples is essential for analyzing trace levels of these gases. This study found that sealing vials with butyl rubber stoppers is not suitable for H-2 and CO storage due to gas release from the rubber material. Using silicone as a sealing material and a stainless-steel bolt and O-ring as a secondary barrier proved to minimize contamination and improve long-term storage of the gases.
