Drivers of Marine CO2-Carbonate Chemistry in the Northern Antarctic Peninsula

Mauricio Santos-Andrade et al.

Summary: This study assessed long-term changes in carbonate chemistry in the Bransfield Strait and found that the hydrographic setting drives temporal variability of carbonate parameters. The western basin has experienced decreases in pH and O-ar over the last three decades. The central basin was characterized by a high contribution of Dense Shelf Water with high carbon dioxide content.

Continued glacial retreat linked to changing macronutrient supply along the West Antarctic Peninsula

Rhiannon L. Jones et al.

Summary: Continued atmospheric and oceanic warming at the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is causing significant changes to glaciers and the marine environment. Two bays along the WAP were compared during austral summer 2020 to study sediment sources and drivers of macronutrient distributions. The study found that land-terminating glaciers have a meltwater-rich surface layer with strong vertical mixing, while marine-terminating glaciers drive vigorous mixing of sediment and entrainment of macronutrient deep waters. This shift to land-terminating glaciers may have a significant impact on nutrient and sediment supply to the euphotic zone, affecting primary productivity and carbon uptake efficiency.

Antarctica Slope Front bifurcation eddy: A stationary feature influencing CO2 dynamics in the northern Antarctic Peninsula

Brendon Yuri Damini et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics of sea-air CO2 dynamics through the investigation of an anticyclonic stationary eddy called the Antarctica Slope Front bifurcation (ASFb) eddy, located south of Clarence Island in the eastern basin of Bransfield Strait. The results revealed that the ASFb eddy acts as a CO2 outgassing structure with a core consisting of carbon-rich waters. These findings provide important insights into the behavior of mesoscale features influencing sea-air CO2 exchanges in polar environments.

Long-term changes on the Bransfield Strait deep water masses: Variability, drivers and connections with the northwestern Weddell Sea

Brendon Yuri Damini et al.

Summary: The Bransfield Strait receives significant input from dense shelf water formed in the Weddell Sea, leading to different trends in deep water properties in its central and eastern basins. This variability is likely due to different mixing proportions and sources of the dense waters precursors. The interannual variability of thermohaline properties in the Bransfield Strait is influenced by climate modes such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation and the Southern Annular Mode, impacting the contribution of high salinity shelf water. Evidence suggests an increase in high salinity shelf water due to sea ice formation in the Weddell Sea, highlighting the importance of understanding how changes in source water masses affect global overturning circulation.

Variability and Dynamics of Along-Shore Exchange on the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) Continental Shelf

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula is characterized by strong alongshore hydrographic gradients influenced by warm Bellingshausen Sea to the south and cold Weddell Sea water to the north. The seasonal and interannual variability in along-shore exchange processes control the spatial structure and variability of glacier retreat and other physical and biochemical factors along the shelf. The wind conditions and hemispheric-scale climate processes play a key role in modulating the amount of cold water flowing into the central West Antarctic Peninsula from Bransfield Strait, highlighting the significance of along-shore exchange in regulating hydrographic properties in the region.

OC4-SO: A New Chlorophyll-a Algorithm for the Western Antarctic Peninsula Using Multi-Sensor Satellite Data

Afonso Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of global and regional satellite algorithms in the Western Antarctic Peninsula and investigates the factors contributing to Chl-a underestimation. The results show that the global algorithm underestimates in-situ Chl-a by an average of ~59%, with higher underestimation in waters with greater Chl-a concentrations. No clear link was found between Chl-a underestimation and pigment packaging effect, phytoplankton community composition, or sea ice contamination. A new satellite Chl-a algorithm, OC4-SO, is proposed based on multi-sensor satellite data and the most comprehensive in-situ dataset collected from the Western Antarctic Peninsula.

Internal tsunamigenesis and ocean mixing driven by glacier calving in Antarctica

Michael P. Meredith et al.

Summary: Ocean mixing around Antarctica plays a crucial role in global sea level and climate, traditionally attributed to wind, tides, and buoyancy forcing. However, direct observations from the Antarctic Peninsula reveal that glacier calving triggers internal tsunamis, which drive vigorous mixing. These internal tsunamis, being widespread and frequent, are at least as important as winds and much more important than tides in driving regional shelf mixing, potentially applicable to Greenland and across the Arctic.

Iceberg drift and melting rates in the northwestern Weddell Sea, Antarctica: Novel automated regional estimates through machine learning

Mauro M. Barbat et al.

Summary: This study utilizes machine learning methods to analyze the trajectories and potential freshwater input of 450 icebergs in the northwest Weddell Sea, Antarctica. The results reveal a predominance of northward flux and the entrance of icebergs into the Bransfield Strait. The average drift speed is calculated to be 3.4 +/- 2.7 km day(-1) with an average disintegration rate of approximately 62% per year. These findings contribute to the understanding of autonomous applications for iceberg detection and tracking in a region of significant importance for ocean and climate studies.

Large diatom bloom off the Antarctic Peninsula during cool conditions associated with the 2015/2016 El Nino

Raul Rodrigo Costa et al.

Summary: A large diatom bloom was observed off the Northern Antarctic Peninsula in 2015/2016, with low meltwater input, cold temperatures, and high salinity. This suggests that such blooms may be restricted under warmer conditions. Through direct measurements and remote sensing data, a close link between large diatom blooms, ocean physical structures, and sea ice cover was found due to the El Nino effects. The study hypothesizes that continued atmospheric and oceanic warming trends leading to increased meltwater concentration will result in more episodic and spatially/temporally restricted diatom blooms.

Seasonal dispersal of fjord meltwaters as an important source of iron and manganese to coastal Antarctic phytoplankton

Kiefer O. Forsch et al.

Summary: By studying the iron sources in a heavily glaciated western Antarctic Peninsula fjord, it is revealed that surface glacial melt and subglacial plumes contribute to the seasonal cycle of iron and manganese within the environment. The study also shows that organic ligands derived from phytoplankton and glaciers play a role in the dispersion of dissolved and particulate iron downstream, while buoyant plumes enriched in labile particulate trace metals supply iron to the fjord euphotic zone. Additionally, prolonged katabatic wind events enhance the export of meltwater out of the fjord, indicating an important atmosphere-ice-ocean coupling in coastal iron biogeochemistry and primary productivity along the WAP.

Summary: The Weddell Sea is an important region in the Southern Ocean where water masses form. Primary production and nutrient uptake vary across different areas, with the Antarctic Peninsula and Larsen C Ice Shelf showing highest rates. The study found that carbon export potential was highest in areas with higher levels of nitrate uptake.

A novel hydrographic gridded data set for the northern Antarctic Peninsula

Tiago S. Dotto et al.

Summary: The northern Antarctic Peninsula (NAP) is a dynamic transitional zone affected by intense climate change, with water masses mainly originating from the Bellingshausen and Weddell seas. Limited understanding of the region's water masses and dynamic processes is attributed to sparse data coverage. The novel NAPv1.0 data set presented in this work provides a valuable tool for studying climatological changes in the NAP region.
