Ni, Ti, and NiTi laser ablation in vacuum and in water to deposit thin films or to generate nanoparticles in solution

Lorenzo Torrisi et al.

Summary: The study found that AnnsNd:YAG pulsed laser can be used to deposit thin films in a vacuum and generate nanoparticles in water. The nanoparticles produced by laser ablation have dimensions of around 25 nm and concentrations of around a few mg/ml, with the stoichiometry of NiTi alloy validated in the thin films and nanoparticles.

Summary: This study reported on the fabrication of antibacterial nanostructures using laser ablation, showing that nanospikes and periodic surface ripples on a Ti surface have strong anti-biofilm effects. The addition of cytotoxic nanoparticles (Ag, Se) further enhanced the bactericidal activities. The antibacterial properties of these nanostructures were demonstrated through live/dead tests, with the combination of chemical toxicity of nanoparticles and mechanical damage from sharp nanoscale relief on Ti being the primary mechanisms.
