Buried-Electrode Hybrid Bonded Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Electro-Optic Mach-Zehnder Modulators

Forrest Valdez et al.

Summary: Hybrid bonded silicon nitride thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) at 1310 nm with buried metal coplanar waveguide electrodes in the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chip were designed. These MZM devices showed significant improvements compared to previous devices of a similar design and similar performance to comparable MZM devices with gold electrodes on top of the TFLN layer. Both devices achieved a 3-dB electro-optic bandwidth greater than 110 GHz and voltage-driven optical extinction ratios greater than 28 dB. The half-wave voltage-length products (Vp L) were measured to be 2.8 and 2.5 V.cm for the 0.5 and 0.4 cm long buried metal and top gold electrode MZMs, respectively.

Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Optical Modulators with an Extrapolated Bandwidth of 170 GHz

Farzaneh Arab Juneghani et al.

Summary: High-speed modulators with low driving voltage, low loss, and compact size are crucial for future optical communication systems. Thin-film lithium niobate modulators have met these criteria separately, but achieving all of them simultaneously has been challenging. This challenge is overcome by placing the optical waveguides nonsymmetrically with respect to the electrodes and including a dielectric buffer layer beneath the electrodes. The resulting modulator exhibits excellent performance with a wide bandwidth and is suitable for next-generation optical communication systems.
