Retention Forces for Drops on Microstructured Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Shaur Humayun et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the retention forces between drops and superhydrophobic surfaces by measuring the contact angle distribution and base area shapes of drops on inclined microstructured superhydrophobic surfaces. The results show that using a sigmoid contact angle distribution and modified base area shape yields better retention forces compared to previous methods. The findings provide insights into the dynamics of drops on superhydrophobic surfaces and have implications for predicting heat transfer rates during dropwise condensation.

Wind- and gravity-forced drop depinning

Edward B. White et al.

Summary: This study establishes a mechanical model to explain the depinning of liquid drops caused by the combined action of gravity and high-Reynolds-number wind, and verifies the model through experiments on water drops on a roughened aluminum surface. The critical Weber number for drops depinning on inclined surfaces decreases linearly with the product of the Bond number and the width-to-height aspect ratio of unforced drops.

Role of resisting shear on the shedding drops

Lukesh Kumar Mahato et al.

Summary: When a droplet is in motion, resisting shear increases with viscosity and velocity, compared to adhesion, regardless of surface wettability. The total shear, with wedge shear being higher than bulk shear, is found to decrease with lower viscosity and higher velocity drops at a given Weber number.
