Development of Atomistic Kerogen Models and Their Applications for Gas Adsorption and Diffusion: A Mini-Review

Amael Obliger et al.

Summary: With the emergence of shale gas, there have been numerous proposed atomic scale models of kerogen in the literature. These models are used commonly, if not routinely, to gain nanoscale insights into processes such as hydrocarbon recovery and carbon sequestration. However, modeling such a complex and heterogeneous material is challenging, since important assumptions and simplifications have to be made, which can significantly affect predicted properties. This mini review discusses the existing atomistic models of kerogen, categorizing them based on construction approaches and assumptions, and describes their impact on property predictions. It also describes important work on kerogen interactions with gas and oil, and discusses possible improvements and upscaling strategies to better account for kerogen in its geological environment.

Molecular investigation on CO2-CH4 displacement and kerogen deformation in enhanced shale gas recovery

Jian Wu et al.

Summary: CO2-enhanced gas recovery is a promising method for improving shale gas production and achieving CO2 storage. The displacement efficiency of CO2-CH4 increases with CO2 injection pressure but decreases with reservoir depletion pressure. CO2 injection induces expansion of the original CH4-saturated kerogen, leading to reduced permeability.

The progress of enhanced gas recovery (EGR) in shale gas reservoirs: A review of theory, experiments, and simulations

Athumani Omari et al.

Summary: Due to the combined advantages of CO2 injection for boosting natural gas recovery efficiency and sequestration of CO2 in depleted shale gas reservoirs, the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) approach has gained attention. This paper reviews numerous published studies to analyze the viability of this technique. The studies show that CO2 injected into shales is adsorbed on the rock matrix, resulting in CH4 desorption and additional gas recovery. The best fit adsorption models and the impact of geological and petrophysical factors on gas recovery are discussed. The findings emphasize the importance of factors like well spacing, fracture permeability, and injection pressure in effective field demonstration for CO2-EGR projects.

Free Volume Model for Transport in Flexible Kerogen of Source Rock's Organic Matter

Kristina Ariskina et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed a model to investigate the transport of adsorbed fluid within the microporous network of flexible kerogen structures. The model is based on the Fujita-Kishimoto free volume theory and molecular dynamics calculations. We found that the coupling between fluid dynamics and kerogen matrix atoms does not introduce significant collective effects, and averaging over all dimensions is still possible despite slightly anisotropic diffusion properties. Furthermore, we established a relationship between the increase in self-diffusion coefficients and the increase in accessible free volume using the Fujita-Kishimoto model.

Molecular characterization of carbon dioxide, methane, and water adsorption in micropore space of kerogen matrix

Leebyn Chong et al.

Summary: The interaction of carbon dioxide and methane with organic matter represented by kerogen heavily impacts carbon storage and enhanced gas recovery in shales. In this study, molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations were used to investigate the adsorption of carbon dioxide, methane, and water in immature type II-A kerogen. Water shows the highest uptake due to strong energy interaction with kerogen, while methane and carbon dioxide display similar adsorption in micropore space.

Determination of CH4, C2H6 and CO2 adsorption in shale kerogens coupling sorption-induced swelling

Xinran Yu et al.

Summary: Gas adsorption in kerogen can induce swelling, and a theoretical model is proposed to calculate excess adsorption isotherms coupling swelling. Results show stronger affinities of C2H6 and CO2 than CH4, but larger C2H6 size leads to smaller maximum adsorption amounts. A linear relationship between volumetric strain and adsorption amount is found for CH4, C2H6, and CO2 separately.
