Propagation Modeling of Rainfall-Induced Landslides: A Case Study of the Shaziba Landslide in Enshi, China

Li Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, the geomechanical properties of landslide in Enshi County were obtained through field surveys, and the Shaziba landslide was simulated using particle flow and discrete element models. The simulation results showed that the landslide movement lasted approximately 1000 s, with a maximum average velocity of 7.5 m/s and an average runout distance of about 1000 m. The simulated morphology of the landslide deposits matched well with the field data. Additionally, the influence of effective modulus on the calculation results was analyzed.

Numerical modelling of rheological properties of landslide debris

Arunava Ray et al.

Summary: This study simulated and calibrated debris flow in a laboratory setting, validated with a case study of the Varunavat landslide, and evaluated the impact of various factors on debris flow. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the debris flow was conducted, along with an examination of the role of retaining walls in mitigating debris flow.

The Wuxie debris flows triggered by a record-breaking rainstorm on 10 June 2021 in Zhuji City, Zhejiang Province, China

Fawu Wang et al.

Summary: On 9 June 2021, Zhuji experienced the largest rainfall ever recorded, triggering several debris flows that caused casualties and the closure of a scenic area. The extreme rainfall event, complex topography, and abundant diluvium were the main contributing factors to the disastrous damage. Steep eluvial slopes and geometric properties of the gullies interacted significantly with diluvium erosion, resulting in mass enlargement and long-runout movement of the debris flows. Reasonable countermeasures played a role in reducing and mitigating such geodisasters.

Deformation characteristics of a large landslide reactivated by human activity in Wanyuan city, Sichuan Province, China

Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: With rapid urbanization, there has been an increase in landslides caused by human activities. This study analyzed a human-induced landslide called the Maobazi landslide in Sichuan Province, China, which was triggered by foundation pit excavation. Emergency investigations and monitoring schemes were implemented to control and monitor the reactivated deposits, which showed rapid deformations. The results revealed the large scale of the Maobazi landslide and the potential catastrophic consequences if it reached nearby residential areas.

Guocun landslide in a slate slope with dip structure on 27 March 2021 in Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province, China

Fawu Wang et al.

Summary: On 27 March 2021, a landslide with a volume of approximately 2 x 10(4) m(3) occurred in Guocun Village, Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province, China. The timely road closures prevented casualties due to early detection of unusual noises by local residents. The landslide was caused by slope cutting during road construction and the intrusion of magma, resulting in the metamorphism of mudstone to easily fractured slate, which controlled the change in motion from transitional sliding to dry debris flow.

Modelling the evolution of propagation and runout from a gravel-silty clay landslide to a debris flow in Shaziba, southwestern Hubei Province, China

Xudong Hu et al.

Summary: This study utilized numerical modelling to analyze the kinematic characteristics of a landslide-generated debris flow event in Shaziba, Enshi City, that occurred on June 8, 2020. The results showed overall acceleration in the initial stage, and the movement of gravel-silty clay materials lasted for a considerable amount of time, providing valuable insights for understanding the dynamics of similar geological hazards.

Reactivated Wuwanchai landslide area monitoring and analysis

Chien-Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: Terrain that has experienced a landslide before is more prone to reactivate landslides. The reactivated Wuwanchai landslide in southern Taiwan has shown slow movement and ongoing creek erosion. Field investigations, airborne LiDAR surveys, and UAV photogrammetry were used to monitor the deformation characteristics and failure mechanisms of the reactivated landslide, and the results were compared to traditional inclinometer monitoring and groundwater level measurements. The separation of the landslide area based on the deformation characteristics of the sliding blocks provides the best explanation for the reactivation mechanism of this large-scale landslide.

The Hongchi landslide triggered by heavy rainfall from Super Typhoon In-Fa on 25 July 2021 in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China

Fawu Wang et al.

Summary: On July 25, 2021, a landslide occurred in Hongchi Village, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, caused by Super Typhoon In-Fa. The landslide resulted in road blockage and damage to residential houses. Through field investigation and analysis, it was found that the existence of a fault and the geotechnical nature of the silty clay played crucial roles in the initiation of the landslide.

Probabilistic analysis of a discrete element modelling of the runout behavior of the Jiweishan landslide

Bing Li et al.

Summary: Landslides are destructive geohazards that can be estimated through numerical simulations. This paper presents a probabilistic analysis of the runout behavior of the Jiweishan landslide, explicitly considering the uncertainty in micro-parameter selection. Results obtained from PFC simulations provide improved estimates of landslide behavior and aid in risk assessment.
