The disparity in tree cover and ecosystem service values among redlining classes in the United States

David J. Nowak et al.

Summary: In the 1930's, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board developed a program to evaluate the risk levels of real estate in several cities using four classes (A, B, C, and D). Recent studies have shown that areas that were previously classified as high-risk (class D) have higher heat island effects, more impervious surfaces, and lower tree cover. This study analyzed all the high-risk areas in U.S. cities and confirmed that these areas have lower tree cover, more impervious surfaces, and lower forest ecosystem service values compared to other classes. The findings highlight the importance of impervious cover in the distribution of ecosystem services.

The Benefits and Limits of Urban Tree Planting for Environmental and Human Health

Diane E. Pataki et al.

Summary: Research shows that urban trees provide benefits such as local cooling, stormwater absorption, and health benefits for residents, but have limited potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Due to space constraints, urban trees are more promising for climate and pollution adaptation strategies rather than mitigation strategies.
