A new accounting framework for assessing forest footprint of nations

Inaki Arto et al.

Summary: In a tele-coupled and globalized world, understanding the relationship between demand for wood products and land use is challenging. This paper introduces a novel accounting framework for assessing the forest footprint of nations, using a multi-regional input-output technique. The study analyzes the forest footprint of nations in 2014 and provides insights into the global resource flows and production, transformation, trade, and use of forest products.

A modelling approach to evaluate land management options for recently burnt catchments

Marta Basso et al.

Summary: This research examines post-fire land management options in the Mediterranean region and their impacts on water resources. By simulating different post-fire scenarios, it was found that terracing and mulching can reduce soil loss and sediment transport but may increase flow volumes and phosphorus exports.

Advantages and disadvantages of terracing: A comprehensive review

Chuxiong Deng et al.

Summary: Terracing has been important for soil conservation and agricultural production for thousands of years, providing benefits such as reduced runoff and sediment, increased crop yields, and soil moisture. However, as terraces age, they may lead to environmental issues such as interference with water circulation.

Multi-Temporal Sentinel-2 Data Analysis for Smallholding Forest Cut Control

Alberto Lopez-Amoedo et al.

Summary: This study successfully analyzed forest cuts in small pine and eucalyptus plots in southern Galicia using multitemporal Sentinel-2 images, proposing an approach based on NDVI time series that accurately detects and controls cuts, as well as quantifies plot areas and cutting dates. The methodology achieved a high accuracy in detecting and dating cuts, with the main difficulty being cloud cover affecting the multitemporal analysis.

Splash Erosion on Terraces, Does It Make a Difference If the Terracing Is Done before or after a Fire?

Maria Fernandez-Raga et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of terracing after a fire on erosion processes, finding that post-fire terracing leads to higher erosion rates and that using a funnel system for sampling can effectively prevent loss of splashed soil samples.

Summary: The study of terraces is currently limited by issues such as mapping and dating problems, and lack of artefacts/ecofacts. However, new technologies can overcome these constraints, allowing for a re-engagement with theoretical debates around agricultural intensification.
