Association of Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants With Cognitive Decline and Dementia A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Brian Sheng Yep Yeo et al.

Summary: Hearing loss is linked to cognitive decline, but the effect of hearing restorative devices on cognition is unclear. This study evaluated the associations between hearing aids and cochlear implants with cognitive decline and dementia. The findings suggest that the use of hearing restorative devices is associated with a 19% decrease in the risk of long-term cognitive decline and a 3% improvement in short-term cognitive test scores.

Association between hearing aid use and all-cause and cause-specific dementia: an analysis of the UK Biobank cohort

Fan Jiang et al.

Summary: The use of hearing aids is associated with a similar risk of dementia in people with hearing loss as compared to those without. Hearing loss accounts for 29.6% of the attributable risk of dementia, and the association between hearing aid use and dementia is partially mediated by reducing social isolation, loneliness, and depressed mood.

Summary: The ARIC project, initiated in 1987, focuses on community-based surveillance for myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease, aiming to understand the decline in CHD mortality and identify determinants of subclinical atherosclerosis and CHD in middle-aged Black and White adults. Through research in areas such as health disparities, genomics, heart failure, and prevention, ARIC has published over 2,300 papers with significant clinical impact, highlighting the importance of population-based research in improving health.
