Effects of cell quality in grid boundary layer on the simulated flow around a square cylinder

Luca Bruno et al.

Summary: The flow around a square cylinder is a widely studied case in bluff body aerodynamics. However, the effects of grid quality on this type of flow have been overlooked in previous studies. This paper fills the gap by discussing the errors induced by poor grid quality and possible corrective measures. The effects of cell quality on the simulated flow are evaluated through a parametrical study, and the results are compared and discussed in terms of flow fields, stress distribution, and aerodynamic coefficients.

Summary: In this paper, Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are used to evaluate wind loads on a high-rise building in Milan, Italy. The sensitivity of the results to the adopted mesh is analyzed and compared to wind tunnel measurements. The economic viability of such simulations is also discussed.

Effects of free-stream turbulence on the near wake flow and aerodynamic forces of a square cylinder

Ming Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a systematic experimental study on the near wake flow and aerodynamic forces of a square cylinder in turbulent flows. It explores the respective influences of turbulence integral length scale and turbulence intensity. The results show that increased turbulence integral length scale and turbulence intensity can lead to changes in vortex formation length, vortex shedding process, and interactions between vortex rows. This results in reductions in Reynolds normal and shear stresses, turbulence kinetic energy, and fluctuating lift forces. The study also captures a unique flow pattern with flow reattachment and reseparation on the square cylinder in a highly turbulent flow with a turbulence intensity of 20%.

Effects of oncoming flow turbulence on the near wake and forces of a 3D square cylinder

Chongyu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the aerodynamic forces and near wake of a 3D square cylinder at a low-speed wind tunnel, focusing on the effects of different turbulence intensities on the forces and near wake. The results showed that increasing turbulence intensity reduced the aerodynamic forces and longitudinal correlation for a 2D cylinder, but enhanced both for a 3D cylinder. Proper orthogonal decomposition analysis indicated that the near wake of the 2D cylinder became less organized with increasing turbulence intensity, while the near wake of the 3D cylinder became more coherent and organized.
