Citizen science reveals waterfowl responses to extreme winter weather

Nicholas M. Masto et al.

Summary: Global climate change is leading to more frequent and severe extreme climatic events, which can have detrimental effects on many species, especially during late-winter when resources are scarce. This study used 14 years of eBird data to examine the distribution changes of wintering waterfowl species in response to extreme winter polar vortex disruptions. The results showed that waterfowl populations were affected by the extreme weather, but the responses varied among species and flyways. Larger-bodied waterfowl tended to delay their northward range shift during extreme events, while smaller-bodied ducks were less affected. Wetland obligate species shifted southward during extreme events. These findings highlight the importance of specialized foraging strategies and provide valuable information for conservation policy and management.

Acoustic detection of gunshots to improve measurement and mapping of hunting activity

Richard W. Hedley et al.

Summary: This study used passive acoustic monitoring to examine the spatiotemporal patterns of hunting-related gunshots. The results indicated that the energy detector produced higher quality and more interpretable data compared to the recognizer. The study found that hunting activity was concentrated near vehicle access points and peaked on Saturdays, with hunters largely complying with regulations prohibiting Sunday hunting. Comparison with remote cameras showed similar spatiotemporal patterns of hunting effort.

The effect of individual harvest on crippling losses

Matthew B. Ellis et al.

Summary: Crippling loss is recognized as a part of waterfowl harvest, but there are few contemporary estimates. In this study, a zero-inflated negative binomial model was used to estimate waterfowl crippling losses from harvest data reported by waterfowl hunters in Illinois, USA. The findings show that crippling rates decrease with increasing harvest and days afield, and the probability of falsely reporting zero crippling loss varies among different types of hunters. The study suggests that modest improvements in hunter skill could lead to significant reductions in crippling loss.

Informing wetland management with waterfowl movement and sanctuary use responses to human-induced disturbance

Fiona McDuie et al.

Summary: Long-term environmental management to prevent waterfowl population declines is based on ecology, movement behavior, and habitat use patterns. Human-induced disturbance can cause changes in behavior, affecting movement and resource needs. A study in California found that dabbling ducks adjust rapidly to different levels of disturbance during hunting season, showcasing the importance of understanding the relationship between human disturbance and animal behavior for effective management strategies.
