U-Pb zircon age and mineralogy of the St Georgen halloysite tuff shed light on the timing of the middle Badenian (mid-Langhian) transgression, ash dispersal and palaeoenvironmental conditions in the southern Vienna Basin, Austria

Branimir Segvic et al.

Summary: A geochronological study of the St Georgen tuff in the Vienna Basin reveals the timing of the middle Badenian transgression and the provenance of the tephra. The tuff's ages range from 15.78 +/- 0.27 to 14.36 +/- 0.31 Ma, with an average age of 14.59 +/- 0.2 Ma. The Harsany eruption in the central Pannonian Basin is identified as the most likely source of the tephra transported by tradewinds or easterlies. The prevalence of halloysite and post-depositional alteration reactions suggests tephra fallout in a shallow sea affected by wetting and drying cycles.

New evidence for Early Miocene palaeoenvironmental changes in the North Croatian Basin: Insights implicated by microfossil assemblages

Valentina Hajek-Tadesse et al.

Summary: An integrated stratigraphic study was carried out on the Lower Miocene deposits in the Poljanska and Mala sections of the North Croatian Basin. The study included dating, geochemical analysis, and mineralogical study of volcanic and silty sand beds. The sedimentary record showed evidence of deposition influenced by volcanic activity, and the presence of different types of microfossils indicated a complex paleoenvironment. Four distinct units were identified based on fossil content and sedimentological data. The findings provide insights into the geological history of the region and the development of lacustrine and marine environments during the Miocene.

Tracing widespread Early Miocene ignimbrite eruptions and petrogenesis at the onset of the Carpathian-Pannonian Region silicic volcanism

Mihovil Brlek et al.

Summary: The Carpathian-Pannonian Region (CPR) experienced large silicic volcanic eruptions during the Early and Middle Miocene. By studying the eruption chronology and petrogenesis of rhyolitic ignimbrites and pyroclastic fall deposits, it was found that the eruptions at 18.1 Ma and 17.3 Ma produced widespread caldera-forming rhyolitic ignimbrites and ash deposits in the northern and southwestern CPR. The compositions of volcanic glass shards suggest complex magmatic systems during the eruptions, and isotopic changes indicate variations in the interaction between mantle-derived magmas and crustal components during lithospheric thinning of the Pannonian Basin.

Tracing magmatic genesis and evolution through single zircon crystals from successive supereruptions from the Socorro Caldera Complex, USA

Sean P. Gaynor et al.

Summary: Large volume rhyolitic ignimbrite volcanism significantly contributes to the evolution of the crust through the introduction of high-silica material and differentiation within the crust. Accurate models for the genetic evolution of these events rely on geochronology, which determines the rates of magmatic processes. This study presents new zircon geochronology and Hf isotope geochemistry for ignimbrites from the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field, providing insights into the protracted evolution of the lower crust.

The importance of high precision in the evaluation of U-Pb zircon age spectra

Sean P. Gaynor et al.

Summary: This study presents high-precision isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) U-Pb zircon data from the Carboniferous Punteglias granodiorite in Switzerland. The results show that the zircon crystals have a mixture of two different age components, and the crystallization age of the zircon is determined to be 335.479 +/- 0.041 Ma. Additionally, pretreating the zircon samples with physical and chemical abrasion reduces age dispersion and allows for a more accurate determination of the initial magmatic domains. The high analytical precision of this study is crucial for correctly interpreting complex age spectra.

Reka Lukacs et al.

Summary: This paper outlines the lithostratigraphic characteristics and classification of silicic pyroclastic deposits in Northern Hungary during the early- to mid-Miocene. Based on new geochronological, volcanological, petrological, and geochemical data, the lithostratigraphic units have been revised and renamed. This revision is important for geological mapping and other related studies.

Large-magnitude (VEI ≥ 7) 'wet' explosive silicic eruption preserved a Lower Miocene habitat at the Ipolytarnoc Fossil Site, North Hungary

David Karatson et al.

Summary: The study of a volcanic eruption in the Pannonian Basin during the Miocene period reveals the interaction between the geosphere and biosphere. The volcanic ash covered the Ipolytarnoc Fossil Site, but the presence of uncharred tree trunks, branches, and intact leaves, as well as rock paleomagnetic properties, indicates that this was a low-temperature pyroclastic event that preserved the coastal habitat and unique fossil tracks.

Tephrochronology of a distal tonstein layer within the Maritsa East lignite basin, Bulgaria: Potential sources of the Miocene large explosive eruption

Summary: This contribution presents the age of detrital zircons in the coal-bearing Miocene succession of the Maritsa East lignite basin, along with a new finding of pyroclastic beds in the same succession. The detrital age component analysis reveals input from proximal area basement, with the most common age cluster indicating sources from Early Permian-Late Carboniferous intrusions. The newly-recognized pyroclastic beds are products of distal volcanic eruptions and play a significant role in the sedimentary succession.

Changes in calcareous nannoplankton assemblages around the Eocene-Oligocene climate transition in the Hungarian Palaeogene Basin (Central Paratethys)

Summary: This study focuses on the Hungarian Palaeogene Basin within the Central Paratethys to characterize the effect of the global cooling event on calcareous nannoplankton assemblages and reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the region. The research shows that during the Eocene-Oligocene climate transition, the calcareous nannoplankton assemblages underwent significant changes, with species gradually adapting to cooler surface waters.

Summary: The study provides insights into the Miocene tectonic evolution of the western Pannonian Basin and its connection to Cretaceous structures. It highlights the initiation of extension and deformation processes, as well as the evolution of depositional environments in the basin over time. The findings suggest a significant shift of active faulting and basin formation towards the Pannonian Basin center during the late Miocene.

Miocene tuffs from the Dinarides and Eastern Alps as proxies of the Pannonian Basin lithosphere dynamics and tropospheric circulation patterns in Central Europe

Luka Badurina et al.

Summary: Tuffaceous layers in Miocene sediments of the Dinarides and Eastern Alps were analyzed to determine their mineralogical composition and infer potential source areas of volcanic ash. The tuffs examined displayed varying degrees of alteration, with different compositions ranging from andesite to rhyolite. Using trace-element correlation, it was determined that the earlier tuffs likely originated from the Western Carpathians, while the later ones were sourced from the Apuseni Mountains and/or Eastern Carpathians. The spatial distribution of the tuffs suggests tropospheric easterly trade winds as the likely carrier of ash towards the southwest.

Long-term repeatability and interlaboratory reproducibility of high-precision ID-TIMS U-Pb geochronology

Urs Schaltegger et al.

Summary: The study compared data from the geochronology laboratory of University of Geneva using ET100 and ET2000 solutions with results from Princeton University and ETH Zurich. It found that the choice of thermal ionization mass spectrometer model does not affect data precision and accuracy, and excess scatter in ET100 solution data can be reduced with careful tracer-sample equilibration. Additionally, natural zircon reference materials are not ideal for evaluating repeatability and reproducibility within and between laboratories due to their complexities.
